Exploring Life & Business with David McGuffin of Space City Payments

Today we’d like to introduce you to David McGuffin.

Hi David, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I had been in merchant services for several years as an agent for a single company when I had a business colleague looking for processing for her high risk CBD business and the company I was boarding with did not do any high risk at all. I researched and found a couple of great companies that would fit those needs. This was back in 2020. I was now boarding merchants with several different companies and so Space City Payments was born. Fast forward to today and we now have 7 companies we can board with including a couple that can do super high risk like peptides. We have also added consumer financing and business funding to our repertoire of services.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not been smooth. Anyone who owns a business and tells you everything goes to plan or goes smoothly is lying. We’ve had our struggles. Everything from unrealistic expectations from a merchant to a merchant taking a fraudulent card and getting chargebacked to a human error in keying in numbers in the app causing problems. We’ve also had extremely smooth installations with no issues and ease of processing. The challenges we have faced just makes the next setup that much easier or better. Knowing different types of businesses and what their pain points are helps as well.
Quick story from a recent application and install. We had a client reach out at 11am on a Friday wanting services and a new point of sale system. The kicker is they wanted it installed the next day on a Saturday. We didn’t get the information for an application until 4pm that afternoon. We were able to push through the application, get approval and the file built for the POS system done by 6pm. Because I had the POS in house I was able to install that Saturday morning!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a Merchant Services broker. We make sure each business is setup on the right platform with the appropriate technology to run their business efficiently and effectively. We can do anything from Retail and restaurants to auto repair, med spa’s, contractors, medical offices, and really any type or size of business. We aren’t successful unless they are successful. We pride ourselves on being accessible to all our merchants. I’m always the first call. If we as a company don’t know about a problem then we can’t fix the problem. We leverage cutting edge technology and personal service to help our clients succeed!

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I participate in a book club for merchant services professionals. We are currently in “The Psychology of Selling” by Brian Tracy. I listen to a couple of industry specific podcasts as well.
