Today we’d like to introduce you to Dayami Meshell.
Dayami, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My mom has always wanted a venue – for birthday parties, weddings, just anything having to do with celebrations and joy. She had this crazy idea of us starting up our own venue in early 2021. I call it crazy because we’d just exited a pandemic that caused so much turbulence in the events industry! Nevertheless, we had her back. I studied business so I had a general understanding of the basics needed to get the business registered, marketing plan, accounting, etc. My dad has been remodeling homes and commercial buildings, so he knows the ins and outs of facility management. My husband’s a woodworker, he can create things out of thin air. He’s built almost every custom door, prop and installment we have! My mom is the visionary, she can see lightyears ahead and keeps us all on the right track. We recently onboarded my younger brother, a go-getter and planner carving his path toward professional event planning. Before we knew it, the entire family was rowing this boat! We enjoy meeting new people from all walks of life. It’s such an honor to know that they chose our space to have this once-in-a-lifetime experience! Each one of us is so involved in these events in different ways. We work as a team, hold each other accountable and may even shed a few tears watching our client’s presentations, special dances and homage. Those moments are everything to us!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
We hit many obstacles along the way. The hall was simply inoperable when we first moved in. We invested not only financially, but also half a year of our time remodeling the facility. As a team, we turned it into what it is today! An open-concept, elegant and classic ballroom.
As you know, we’re big fans of La Villa Venue. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We operate a wedding and events venue. Our family environment, passion and dedication set us apart from your average venue. Each one of our customers becomes part of the family and we do everything possible to work with them. As a family, we’ve always lived a humble lifestyle and so we understand more than anyone how it feels to struggle. We especially understand how important these life events are. Our goal and mission is to provide attainable elegance. Our packages are customizable and tailored to the needs of our customers.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
One word of advice, don’t let customers or vendors run your business. Take all opinions and feedback into consideration, but don’t allow their feedback to dictate your policies. As strange as it may sound, befriend your competition. Anyone else in your industry who has been doing it longer than you is a mentor. Find someone who perhaps is on the opposite side of town or operates a similar yet slightly different business. You’d be surprised how much valuable knowledge you’ll attain!
