Exploring Life & Business with Erin Winick Anthony of STEAM Power Media

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Winick Anthony

Erin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always been the weird engineer that liked to write. In college I majored in mechanical engineering because I loved making things. After having 4 mechanical engineering internships, I found that my true passion was helping share stories about research, rather than doing the engineering work directly.
When I graduated I decided to pursue science communication as a career. I got an internship at The Economist in London in science and technology writing which led to a job as an editor at MIT Technology Review in Boston.
But what brought me down to Houston was my job at NASA. I worked for NASA contractor Barrios Technology for 4 years as a science communication specialist for the International Space Station. During that time I led the 2-year project to revamp the International Space Station Benefits for Humanity initiative, contributing to station’s extension to 2030. I also received NASA’s Silver Snoopy, one of the highest awards given by the agency.
While I loved my time at NASA, I knew I was an entrepreneur at heart. I’d been doing freelance science communication on the side during all of this. That business was growing, and I knew it was time to take the leap. So in April 2023 I left NASA to go full time running my science communication company, STEAM Power Media.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve made a lot of career changes! And every one of those is a risk that comes with challenges. The move from engineering to science communication and the move to starting my own company were big learning experiences. But I’m extremely happy with where I am now and so happy to have taken a few gambles on myself.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I founded STEAM Power Media to show the creativity of science and engineering, and help communicate the incredible breakthroughs happening in STEM.
Technical topics can be very hard to share! I bring my expertise in translating STEM topics, writing, social media and video to help tell these stories. I bring experience working with small and large businesses, and help them feel confident in communicating what they do to the public.
We do this through consulting and direct content creation. I also create content for my own social media channels to an audience of around 150K share the excitement of STEM, and have even made a LinkedIn Learning course that helps engineers become better communicators.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I’m a competitive pinball player! Houston has an amazing pinball scene, and I compete in tournaments on a weekly basis.
