Exploring Life & Business with Jerry Fu of Adapting Leaders

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerry Fu

Hi Jerry, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Leadership saved my career. Leaving the chain pharmacy job for a teaching position at a pharmacy consulting company was supposed to give me the career satisfaction I had been missing. It initially did – until I got fired 11 months later. The next wake-up call happened at the next job I stumbled into, when four of my paychecks bounced filling prescriptions from crooked doctors. My friends got me out of that job with an opportunity at a more legitimate company. But that company couldn’t afford to give me more than 8 hours of work per week. It wasn’t until I had the chance to facilitate a leadership workshop that gave me the confidence to take on a manager position, that things started to turn around. But the success was short-lived. While I had more opportunities for work, those jobs weren’t financially viable. In early 2017, I had the idea to pursue a career in people development as a leadership coach. But it took another three years before I learned how to start and build a business. I’ve been able to appear on over 150 podcasts and get published while I straddle two fences and am looking to pivot fully sooner than later.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Hardly. Finding work after getting fired was a challenge, as I was in a saturated job market for pharmacists. Chasing down paychecks from a crooked boss was also tough. Getting written up for not disciplining/firing problematic employees was yet another. Trying to figure out where to generate revenue when I started my business, and while I continue to build my business. Currently realizing that if I don’t do a better job scaling my business, I can expect to burn out quickly. Same is true for figuring how how to transition out of my day job as a pharmacist.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Adapting Leaders?
I am a certified career and life coach who does coaching sessions, facilitated workshops, and keynote presentations. My primary (but not exclusive) focus is on Asian leaders who have been in director or manager positions for a year or less. I help them become more visible, vocal, and valuable, taking them from self-doubt to self-assurance. Aspects that set me apart from others include my story and my ability to digest and distill large amounts of relevant content. I’m proud of my ability to equip my clients well and to help free them from the expectations of others as they learn how to direct their own lives. I hope readers will appreciate my generosity with resources, my passion for accountability, and figuring out actionable next steps they can immediately start.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Find someone who is willing, available, and competent. Ask yourself: are they demonstrating qualities you desire to see in yourself? As a mentee, be ready to set the agenda and meeting frequency – you want to show them you come prepared out of respect for their busy schedules. Specificity helps. In terms of networking, be ready to get their story and share yours.
