Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesse Chavez.
Hi Jesse, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
This newer Houston facility was built this year about 7 years after my original facility back in California. I started my journey out of a small program in San Diego. From there, I moved over to a much more competitive program where I was able to coach for a few years and learn from some of the best our industry has to offer.
I then moved on to start my own program in a different part of town in San Diego. My background, first and foremost, comes from dance. Anything from Jazz, Contemporary, Lyrical and Hip-Hop. I got into competitive cheerleading and tumbling later in my life (around the 7th-8th grade).
6 years after the original gym was established, I decided to pick up and move to Houston TX with my fiancé who is from here. I took a year off to really lay down the groundwork and find the perfect spot for the new gym. The brand here in Houston is an extension of the three existing facilities in California.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There has absolutely been a lot of obstacles. Some have been mental ones; I don’t come from an affluent background so it’s proper to admit that I do have “imposter syndrome” a lot of the times when taking on a “larger than me” kind of project.
As the new kid in town, it was also challenging to find the staff that best fit our values and that were dependable. Although I do not care for anyone’s opinion, Texas is a huge “cheerleading state” the sport is taken much more seriously here than it is in most demographics. There is a certain level of “needing to prove” ourselves to the city of Houston. I have been turning to my current clientele for guidance on how to keep those Texas values at our gym. All of our facilities have adapted to their surrounding areas.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Pacific Beach Allstars – Houston?
At the Pacific Beach Allstars we specialize in all things cheerleading! From Tumbling to school cheerleading workshops and all the way to our competitive teams, there is definitely something we can offer the athletes that walk through our doors. Unlike most of our competitors, we distinguish our brand by bringing in a more relatable and invaluable product. Our product is more about the journey and growth of each individual athlete vs the outcome. The brands tagline is “Love the sport.” Each individual that goes through our facility has a different definition for what “Love the sport” means to them. Collectively our athletes’ appreciation of the gym shows through and achieves what most programs cannot.
What do you think about happiness?
To live comfortably. I’m at an age now where all I’m really looking for is peace and comfort with my family. I think that with time, life has taught me that peace is paramount. There is nothing more valuable than your peace of mind.
