

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jo Anne Johnson.
Hi Jo, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I left Corporate America in 2003 to stay at home with our 1st child (followed by a 2nd about a year later). Fast forward to 2007, I went to a Housewarming party for a friend who moved from our neighborhood to another close by. There, I met her agent, and we struck up a great conversation about real estate. Her husband, a broker, called me the following week, and after some discussion with my husband, I agreed to get my license to help her part-time in the Fall when my youngest was going to start Mother’s Day Out. What started as a T-Th gig to help her with misc. Tasks late ’07/early ’08 – marketing, maybe opening a home for one of her buyers, etc. – quickly evolved to my friends and family referring me and calling me to sell/buy. I received several awards following my 1st year, and by my 2nd year, my business was growing exponentially to the point that I needed to hire an assistant. Early on, I knew I wanted to be different by design – a “plus one” experience based on 5-star experiences I had at a restaurant, a department store, etc. Today, I’m very blessed to still have a “high touch” business built on repeat business and referrals, and have surrounded myself with a team of professionals who are dedicated to, also, going the extra mile for my clients.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh gosh no! There’s no such thing as a straight line upwards – it’s bumpy with grueling growing pains, etc. But just like an athlete, you get your reps in, you get stronger, you stay grounded by going back to the basics, you stay hungry and humble, you pay it forward by mentoring others on what “not” to do, and you count your blessings! The biggest lesson – even today – is to anticipate staffing needs. Recognize your highest and best use and empower others to do their specialty jobs – their “geniuses” (to use a Pat Lencioni, author, term).
