Today we’d like to introduce you to Joyce Beck.
Hi Joyce, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started teaching dance when I was 16 years old for various studios and programs around the Houston and Clear Lake area. In 1984 I opened my first small one dance room studio in Friendswood, Texas. I taught every class myself and my mom ran the office. We started with 50 students and have grown from there. After ten years of teaching, we built our studio at 2014 East Broadway, Pearland, Texas. Through the 42 years of teaching, I have been a part of some many dancers’ lives. Watching my students grow into responsible and successful adults has been my greatest reward. I have students that have become professional dancers, dance instructors, doctors, lawyers, schoolteachers and the list goes on. What they all have in common is the discipline they gained from being part of a dance studio environment.
Being a part of Dance Masters of America has also been a fulfilling part of my journey. I have been a member of this dance educator’s organization for over 40 years. In 2024 I became president of the Texas Dance Masters Inc. / DMA Chapter #48. This nonprofit organization supports, encourages and provides scholarships for young dancers who want to pursue their dreams.
Being a dance instructor has given me joy; it keeps me striving to find better ways to engage my students and gives me a place to express my creativity. A am so grateful for being able to be part of so many students’ lives.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The Covid years were very hard. Dance is not something that is easily taught online. You need to be able to give hands on corrections and you can not do that over a screen.
There have been hard times and successful times, it’s a process.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Dancescape by Joyce we offer ballet, tap, jazz, pointe, musical theater dance, hip hop, lyrical, contempoary and acro for dancers. We have six DMA certified instructors, instructors with dance degrees and instructors who have been part of the professional dance world. We are a ballet based studio and encourage all of our students to take at least one ballet class a week. We start students at the age of 3 years old and we have classes for every age level and ability level through adults. We offer instruction in an encouraging and supportive environment.
At DBJ we have two performance opportunitites each year. A holiday showcase and a June stage performance. Dancescape by Joyce puts together a production in June that includes every student in the studio that wants to perform. We often create a story with all of our dance genres. Anastasia, Hercules, Aladdin, Pandora’s Box, and Snow White are just a few of the productions we have done over the past 42 years.
