Exploring Life & Business with Juan Morales of The Casa Custom Renovations/ Genesis Pressure Washing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Morales.

Hi Juan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2017, I was unfortunately laid off from work in the oil industry after working 15 years. I pictured myself working here for the rest of my career path, and it was quite a turning point. I turned this moment into an opportunity to reinvent myself and figure out the next move for myself & my family. I had a few friends in the construction business that offered me work, at that time I was 41 years old. The first construction work I started with was building custom made cabinets & helping out painters & brick layers. I was working from the crack of dawn all the way till sun down.

Fast forward 2 years later, I decided to open a business of my own, which would be the start of my pressure washing business. Power washing drive ways, homes, sidewalks etc; I knew I wanted something of my own, I started with handing out cards to home owners and buildings to promote my business while still working at construction job. I eventually registered Genesis pressure washing as my own business. One day, a very good friend of mine, Stefan Ygdevik, offered me to renovate his home, I was faced with fear and the pressure of not knowing what to do first. My friend encouraged me to do it, since I knew many workers in the construction industry, whilst working at his home, neighbors started asking me to work on their homes as well. I was working in this neighborhood for about 5 months, what started as 1 home for a friend, turned into 5 homes. This was exciting and intrigued me to hire more workers and I registered my own contracting business, as The Casa Custom Renovations. I promoted this business on my own and my first clients were referrals from friends & family.

During this time, I met a builder, Jed Goodall, that mentored me from the very beginning of this career path, he guided me and gave me much advice to grow my business, and till this day he is still a main part of my career in contracting.
With the encouragement & support from my loving wife, & Jeff as my mentor, I was really starting to believe I could make this happen. I had the opportunity to power wash a commercial building parking lot, while working here, the executive director of the building asked if I did any other work other than power washing. I answered yes, I could do painting, plumbing, electrical etc; I was hired for a small job inside the building, this job led to another job. From there, the projects kept coming & only kept getting bigger at this commercial building. I was referred to other project management teams in commercial buildings. I was being called to do projects at other facilities as well & from there, the story of my business continues go on. I am now working with engineers, architects, interior designers, to give our clients the vision they want.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No. This road has not been smooth, just like any other risk you could jump into. For the 8 years I’ve been in this business, there has been many struggles, especially when it comes to pricing a project, and marking what is fair for everyone. Almost all our clients have been great, but we have had some that were not the nicest & made It difficult for us to work with.
Being in a learning process, you meet many different people and gain lots of perspectives. We have had financial losses, but the business itself has helped me to keep a good heart and also have thick skin.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a honest contractor in the construction industry. I want my business, more than anything to be known for honesty, quality & being involved in every project from start to finish. While I am serious & passionate about my work ethic, I am also a family man. I am a husband, father and grandfather to the greatest blessings in my life. I work alongside my wife & two eldest daughters, who help me tremendously in the business. All employees take much pride in what they do and I have the upmost respect for each and every one of them I am a man of faith, and I put God before all.

As we keep growing, all sub-contractors will need to meet our standards for every project. As a general contractor, I work side by side with all sub-contractors to ensure each project meets our clients wants and needs.

One thing that I would like to include is, as I take much pride in serving the Houston community, I take pride in being apart of it as well. I am a proud member of the Houston Texans Mariachi. So I guess you can say, not only do I do great on a work field, but also Houstons very own stadium field as well. Go Texans!

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Honesty, determination, & integrity.
