Today we’d like to introduce you to Kay Walker.
Kay, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Oh ok… Apparel originated in 2018 in an empty room in my home caused by Hurricane Harvey. It started with helping fund my son’s college tuition at University of Saint Mary in Kansas. I was determined for him to graduate and that’s exactly what he did. After being recognized by Cecily Groves of FUBU on social media, I was asked to be in my first fashion show in 2018, courtesy of FUBU and We Buy Black in Atlanta. In 2018, I was blessed to be able to trademark Oh ok… it’s officially mine. In 2019, I was awarded Urban Fashion Designer of the year from Earker Coleman, owner of Beauty Under One Roof. Designer Travis Hamilton with Fresh Off The Rail allowed me to showcase my brand. Oh ok… Apparel in many of his fashion shows.
In 2019 and 2020, Oh ok… Apparel was in ‘FOTR’ Streetwear Fashion Show in Houston, Texas, where I showcased my kid’s and adults apparel. February 8, 2020, before Covid tried to take over, I was blessed to be in ‘FOTR’ fashion show for New York Fashion Week in NYC. I’ve been featured in Fashion Maniac magazine, being one of Houston Texas up-and-coming brands photos courtesy of Getty Images. This year on August 14, 2021, I will be in Sky Modeling School’s Elegant Kids Back 2 School fashion show. I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish so many goals without the love and support from my family, friends, clients, and strangers; their support has been amazing! Oh ok… Apparel is my testimony; after God allowed me to experience so many catastrophic events alone in the last four years, I never gave up. You can find Oh ok… Apparel at www.ohokapparel.com and on many social media platforms Instagram @oh_ok_apparel Facebook Oh ok Apparel Twitter @ohokapparel. Kay Walker and Oh ok… Apparel is here to stay!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
My opinion in life I don’t think there’s ever a smooth road for entrepreneurs. There’s been many long days and sleepless nights trying to build my brand and my other business Just Klippers Salon. Everyday is a struggle when you don’t get any sales or clients aren’t coming in for haircuts, and you don’t know how you’re going to pay your bills.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a black female entrepreneur of two successful businesses in Houston Texas. I’m a fashion designer that specializes in dressing models in my brand and a barber stylist that loves cutting all types of hair. I’m proud that I have a brand that everyone wants and wants to wear.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice to entrepreneurs and business owners always remember YOUR VISION IS YOUR VISION not anyone else’s.
