Exploring Life & Business with Keylee Paz of Off Record Media

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keylee Paz

Hi Keylee, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started when I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. I contributed to multiple student-run organizations at school as a writer and photographer, and once I graduated, it became very difficult to navigate through a new publication, as the pandemic was its peak and everything was halted. I decided to take this time to start a new outlet with my former roommate and best friend, an outlet that would focus on up-and-coming creatives in the entertainment sphere.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s so competitive to begin a new outlet. At first, no one would respond to our inquiries, we were denied partnerships with established businesses and venues in Houston. I had to push for these partnerships and establish why were a good fit in the Houston scene, and to this day, that’s all I fight for.

We also struggled to get contributors, so it was only myself and my co-founder contributing pieces for a bit. We found a few contributors, some who are still with us today. We kept growing our platform and going through a bunch obstacles. It wasn’t easy, but we’ve learned how to push through and look out for the benefit of Off Record Media.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are Off Record Media, an independent music publications + booking + promotions team based in Houston, Texas. We aim to provide a platform to underrepresented creatives in the music scene – whether you are a journalist, an artist or a business. Our content and events serve to engage with our audience, as we recognize creative efforts that keep the media world alive.

Our digital publication covers all kinds of music events, from local shows to wider-range shows at all kinds of venues, as well as serve as an entertainment blog for those to catch up on their music fix. We also host numerous of shows across Houston to showcase the local music scene, as it currently remains under developed. From metal shows to EP release shows, our events brings large audiences to promote local artists and music.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Since I work in the music sphere, I always think back to when I had my mom purchased me my very first CD when I was around seven years old. My mom is a HUGE CD collector, and we would always go to the CD store near our apartment in Southside place. I walked in and always played around the store, but one day, this pink CD with a woman wearing a wedding dress caught my attention. I don’t know why it made me stop, but I was obsessed with the album cover.

It was Julieta Venegas’ latest album at the time titled ‘Si,’ and I begged my mom to buy it. She purchased it along with her CDs, and I put it on as soon as we got home. Listening to tracks like “Algo Esta Cambiando” and “A Tu Lado,” I knew from that moment that music would become my entire personality. As an adult, I picked up on my mom’s collecting habits as I started collecting vinyl records.
