Exploring Life & Business with Lauren Johnson of The Jewel Box Counseling, PLLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Johnson

Lauren, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
This is actually my second career. I started as a special education teacher, where I worked closely with low income children. I noticed that I was spending a lot of time during breaks and after school talking with kids about their home life, their struggles, and how they were navigating the world. I decided to go back to school for social work as a way to learn how to advocate for my students. I found myself burning out as a teacher, and switched over to medical social work, but found myself missing working with children. I eventually became a child therapist, which I never thought I’d do. As a child therapist, I was able to interact with a lot of parents who were doing the best they could by their children, but needing a little help, so I decided to start The Jewel Box Counseling. I just wanted to help people find their way to healing.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road, but I have been blessed to have amazing people to help me along the way. One of the biggest challenges was losing my grandmother. I decided to start my business when I had one year of supervision left. When I envisioned what I wanted my business to look like, I remembered all the times I was struggling. My answer was always to go lay on my grandmother’s couch until she could help me identify my feelings and provide her wisdom. My grandmother was my introduction to what therapy could feel like, and it was that comfort I wanted to recreate in my practice. I chose to honor her memory by naming the business after her, but unfortunately she didn’t see it come to fruition.

In addition, imposter syndrome is real. I have, thankfully, had many people who have encouraged me and poured into me through this process. From friends and colleagues who provided knowledge when starting the business, to family members who motivate me to continue and share my business at every chance they can. Also, I had to learn to be ok with making mistakes along the way. My business is still a baby. I have found just being open in my vulnerability and asking questions helped me connect with people who are more than happy to assist.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I am a native Houstonian. I love the fact that our city is a melting pot. There are always opportunities to learn new skills, engage in cultural activities, or simply just enjoy nature. The only downside is the weather can be unpredictable while discovering something new.
