Today we’d like to introduce you to Lezlie Hicks.
Hi Lezlie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started in the events industry, planning and celebrating family and friends’ special milestones! This is when I learned planning and coordinating events was a passion of mine. It brought me joy to help create a beautiful event for special celebrations. The happiness I gained from these small events had me wonder what if I would enjoy planning events on a larger scale. While living in Sacramento, California, and finishing my master’s degree, I decided to pursue a position with an association management company. They hosted several events, from large tradeshow events and golf tournaments to smaller-scale luncheons. I also decided to dabble in Wedding Planning with Kate Whelan Events. That is when I found my true love of wedding planning. There is something so magical about being a part of what a lot of people consider to be one of the best days in their lives. When I started taking on full-service clients, my passion grew. I built long-lasting relationships and still stay in communication with a lot of my past couples. But the passion I have behind planning couples’ weddings is what fuels me to continue growing my business, Lezlie Hicks Events.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I decided to start Lezlie Hicks Events, I had no idea what I was doing. I had a great mentor in Sacramento that helped point me in the right direction, but I jumped all the way in and learned as time went on. Learning to run my own business and wear all the hats has been the most challenging by far.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Lezlie Hicks Events is an event planning company serving the greater Houston area. While my niche is wedding planning, I do offer a full range of services, from corporate event planning to smaller special milestone events. One of my most proud attributes is my attention to detail in making sure a wedding day runs smoothly. I need and want to know ALL the details. I can never know too much. This translates to my clients as well as vendors and puts my couples at ease on their wedding day, knowing nothing is going to be missed!
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
If I am being honest, starting my company in the midst of a pandemic was a huge risk for me. The industry was struggling, weddings were being postponed and/or canceled, and I really didn’t know if my business would even get off the ground. Seeing where I am now while also managing to be a stay-at-home mom to a 16-month-old and a 5-year-old is very gratifying. Taking a risk and seeing it through can be challenging, time-consuming, and completely terrifying. Deciding to open a business meant time away from my family, a lot of late nights, and sometimes even mom’s guilt crept in. But this was a passion of mine, and I want my boys to grow up and see me thrive in something that brings joy and fulfillment to my life. It is ultimately what I want for them and sometimes, you have to take a risk to end up with that opportunity.
