Today we’d like to introduce you to Mario Varela.
Mario, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I moved to Houston from Mexico after college, where I studied Electrical Engineering. Once here, I kept going with my education. I earned an MBA from the University of Houston and then spent a few years working in the oil and gas industry. Even though I liked the work, I always knew I wanted to run my own business. That’s what pushed me to go to South Texas College of Law Houston, become a lawyer, and eventually open my own practice in 2020, right as the pandemic was starting.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not always. I really enjoyed working for large companies in the oil and gas industry, but like many people in that field, I was laid off in 2017 during one of the downturns. I had somewhat anticipated that this might happen, so I had already enrolled in the part-time law school program. For several years, my life was basically going to work, then heading straight to class afterward, and studying on weekends.
Starting law school in my late 40s wasn’t easy—most of my classmates were in their 20s or 30s, and the pace was intense. In fact, law school turned out to be the most challenging project I’ve ever taken on. But that experience also made it incredibly rewarding, and it ultimately led me to where I am today.

My firm, The Law Office of Mario Varela PLLC, is a Houston-based practice focused on helping individuals and families through some of life’s most stressful legal issues. We handle immigration, family law, personal injury, probate and estate planning, and business matters.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the trust we’ve built. Most of our clients come through referrals, which tells me they felt cared for and well-represented.
