Today we’d like to introduce you to Max Burgess.
Hi Max, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Hi, my name is Maxwell Burgess, and I am a songwriter, guitarist, and producer. When I was around 8, my neighborhood friends and I were fans of Naruto. We would go online and look for Naruto episodes; one day, we came across a YouTube music video of Naruto set to Linkin Park’s “In The End.” We really liked the song and then discovered LP’s catalog. Naturally, we decided to form our own band so that we could meet Linkin Park; for some reason, our songs about 8-year-old angst never made it out of the neighborhood… The band didn’t last, but I kept playing guitar and writing songs and began “producing” my songs with a cheap loop pedal. I played music in the church growing up and throughout college. After college, I became a worship leader and started playing open mics around Houston. I met some incredibly talented musicians, and we formed a band called The Working Hours. I met other excellent musicians through gigs, touring, and collaborating. Eventually, I wanted to produce more full-time, and I started taking classes on mixing and mastering. The local band Astralace agreed to record their song “Settlin'” with me. After the release of that song, I began to record other local artists such as Sorry, Sarah, and Whitney Ward. I still continue to play gigs around Houston and work on my own material.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course, there will always be external challenges in every journey, but I have found my greatest difficulties to be internal. As a performer, there are a lot of mixed emotions; you can play a show and feel like a rockstar but struggle with the same song in the recording studio a few days later and feel worthless. I’ve been blessed with friends, collaborators, and bandmates that have helped me accept my own capabilities and inspired me to be patient and keep practicing. These same friends have helped deflate my ego as well as lift me up when I’m low. The lessons I’ve learned through the music journey have helped me have a deeper understanding of my faith in Jesus, as well as how to be a better man to others.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Max Burgess Music?
I am a producer working out of his home studio. I understand how to help artists get the sound they want because I am an artist myself. I work with seasoned professionals as well as songwriters that don’t play instruments. I offer artists production (which is recording and writing the other instruments’ parts), mixing (making all the instruments fit together), and mastering (the final polish). If you want to record, please contact me, and we can talk through the process and figure out what you need to accomplish your vision.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Aiding other artists in revealing their gift to others is very rewarding.
