Exploring Life & Business with Miguel Cruz of Rare Breed Cornhole

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miguel Cruz.

Hi Miguel, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Rare Breed cornhole first started as a group called BG Baggers of Houston. We were a group of cornhole players on the north side/Tomball area. I was given the opportunity to run my first cornhole league in December 2019-January 2020 st District 249 Bar n Grill in Tomball after the previous person that was running was no longer interested in going so. Myself and my cornhole partner at that time, Jim Stevens, took over the league. We partnered up with one of the biggest Cornhole Bag manufacturers, BG (who was now owned by 2 local Houston individuals) in an effort to bring up brand awareness for BG locally and give us credibility in the marketplace.

By December of 2021, a difference in philosophies led to a change of course for me personally. I decided to separate from BG and create my own brand. Through conversation with a close friend, Jeremy Hedin, the name Rare Breed became the front runner for the business. Shortly after, I form Rare Breed Cornhole as a DBA to my already created LLC.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think a smooth road is ever an option for a small business owner. To begin most of us leave the comfort of a stable income, health benefits, retirement plans for the challenges of low income (if any at all), sleepless nights that come from creating your own company.

RB’s challenges were no different that those faced by many companies. Revenue generation was a big one. Having to create your book of business, determine which revenue streams are going to be profitable and focusing on strategic growth.

We continue to face those challenges today but we feel we have a better grip on how to we want to continue our growth plan.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Rare Breed Cornhole was formed Dec 2021

Today we are an ACL (American Cornhole League) approved bag manufacturer, in the top half of all ACL Bag Companies. We have an all encompassing cornhole and event company that specialized in apparel, cornhole bags, corporate cornhole events, ACL sanctioned events.

I personally am the ACL Regional Director for North Houston!

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I was born in Miami, Florida raised in Puerto Rico til I was about 7 then came back to Miami. I came from a broken home. My mom worked 2/3 jobs and I had 2 older brothers and an older sister. My middle brother went to the military (army)as soon as he was of age. My oldest brother join the army in 2000. I enlisted in the army in 2001 shortly after 911.

My favorite all-time childhood memories were when my oldest brother and mother would go fishing off the 7 miles bridge in the Florida Keys. My brother would take me fish in all the time and it felt this was the only place where my world made sense. So fishing with my brother was far and away my best childhood memory.
