Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikquan Lewis.
Hi Nikquan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born in Inglewood, CA, but my upbringing had its chapters written across multiple cities—Atlanta, Milwaukee, and now, Houston. My early years weren’t all sunshine and rainbows. From instability and trauma to witnessing domestic violence, the challenges were numerous. But so were the lessons. Through the highs and lows, I saw glimpses of what a healthy relationship could look like, and I held onto that.
Everything took a sharp turn when I found out I was pregnant at 17. With my daughter born with severe medical conditions, I knew it was time to rewrite the script—not just for me but for future generations. My early experiences, compounded by teen motherhood, fueled my passion for women’s health and breaking generational curses.
As life progressed, so did my family. After having my son, I realized that setting a strong example began with building my career. I was further anchored by the support and love of a friend who eventually became my incredible husband. Our partnership has been a ride and is now a cornerstone in my journey, giving me the space to grow professionally and personally.
Education was my next big step. I secured a BA in Psychology from Cardinal Stritch University and later an MS in Family, Couples, and Individual Psychotherapy from Our Lady of the Lake University. By 2015, I was a dual-licensed therapist and eventually added a s*x therapy certification to my portfolio. This was more than just a personal milestone; it was my way of narrowing the representation gap in the field of Black therapists and Black s*x therapists, in particular. Only 4% of therapists are black. I had to do my part to change that.
Fast-forward to today; I own a thriving practice, Intimate Connections PLLC, based in Katy, Texas. Here, we’re doing more than just therapy; we’re setting people on a path to mental and s*xual wellness by assisting clients with transforming their lives, building healthy relationships, enriching intimacy, and teaching people how to unleash pleasure unapologetically. I have also created transformative Relationship and Intimacy products that stand out as they are curated and informed by a licensed marriage and family therapist and s*x therapist with insight and expertise in relational and s*xual wellbeing.
My work has caught the eyes of major publications, and I have been featured and mentioned in powerhouses, including Essence, Cosmopolitan, and Glamour. I also collaborate with Too Timid, a women-owned adult toy store, where I share s*xual health content.
If I could distill my life’s work into a message, it would be this: We all have our “stuff,” but we don’t have to continue as we began. You hold the power to change your narrative. We all do. And I’m living proof.
As for the road ahead? I’m setting my sights on hosting transformative retreats that focus on relationship-building and unleashing pleasure. And none of this would’ve been possible without the constant support from my business coaches, friends, and family—especially my late grandmother, husband, and my children. My children are my “why”. They are my greatest motivators and my strongest anchors, and I will always go hard for them and because of them. Someone who is such an inspiration to me said it best: Raise children that have childhoods that they don’t have to heal from. That has been my life’s mission, and I have done a damn good job if I don’t say so myself. Lol. This journey has fueled my work and is why I serve others in rewriting their story.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wish lol. The struggle has been real lol. More so, early on in live- growing up in a traumatic environment, being a teen mom, not having a lot of support, etc., and also stress while in undergrad and grad school. I’ve experienced financial struggles, relationship conflict, and more. Now that those stressors have subsided for the most part, the life of an entrepreneur brings on the stress lol. As a business owner that is working to scale my business, it is a challenge! Financially at times, emotionally, and mentally. Long nights and early mornings are required for greatness, and luckily for me, I am no stranger to challenge and know how to execute and continue the course. The stressors definitely are there, but they do not negate the rewards of being in private practice and being able to increase my impact on mental, relational, and s*xual wellbeing.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business.
At its core, Intimate Connections PLLC is a sanctuary for authentic self-discovery and relationship building. Founded by me this is more than a therapy practice; it’s a movement aimed at disrupting unhealthy patterns and sowing seeds of intimacy and relational wellness.
My approach is comprehensive yet tailored to the individual needs of my clients. I provide a suite of services, including individual therapy, couples therapy, and s*x therapy. My specialization is not limited to one avenue of well-being; rather, I integrate mental, relational, and s*xual well-being to offer a holistic experience for adults living in the state of Texas. I aim to equip you with the tools to design the life you’ve always yearned for—beyond the confines of societal norms and expectations.
However, what truly sets me apart is a multi-faceted approach that combines professional licensure with real-life experiences and innovation. I am a therapist but also a speaker, consultant, and a sought-after expert often featured and mentioned in major publications like Essence, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, and more. In a field where only 4% of therapists are Black, my practice also serves as a much-needed space for representation.
But my reach extends beyond the confines of my practice in Katy, Texas. My active social media presence is a buzzing hub where people can glean nuggets of wisdom on enriching intimacy in their lives, both with themselves and their partners. It’s yet another platform where I deliver on my mission to foster healthier relationships. This advocacy is amplified through partnerships with platforms like Too Timid, where I create s*xual health content for their audience.
Not just content with conventional methods, I’ve curated transformative products that tackle relationship and intimacy issues from the ground up, and it’s something you can literally hold in your hands. My “How Do You Want It? Relationship and S*x Conversation Cards” are not just about relationships with others; they’re also designed to help you enhance intimacy with yourself. Paired with an Interactive Digital Guide to Intimacy, these aren’t mere conversation starters—they’re life-altering instruments. Think of them as a toolkit to break the cycle of unsatisfying or harmful relational patterns and elevate your levels of intimacy, both with others and within yourself.
I’ve overcome obstacles, not by luck but through God and a blend of resilience, diligent planning, and my support system. I have endured sleepless nights juggling a full-time job, managing my household, and laying the groundwork for my private practice. Yet, every challenge has been a steppingstone, making the destination that much more worthwhile.
So, what should others know about Intimate Connections PLLC? It’s not just a practice; it’s a living, breathing ecosystem committed to the betterment of intimate lives. When you engage with us, you’re not just a client; you become part of a mission to rewrite the narrative of relationships and s*xual health, particularly for marginalized communities.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along this multifaceted journey is that we are the architects of our own stories. This truth is so much more than just a catchphrase; it’s a lived experience for me and the many people I’ve had the privilege to assist. The obstacles I’ve faced, from teenage motherhood to breaking generational cycles of dysfunction, have taught me the power of resilience and self-determination. These lessons don’t just belong to me; they’re wisdom I actively pass on to my clients and audiences. Whether I’m working one-on-one in therapy or speaking to a room full of black women learning to love and prioritize themselves authentically, the transformation I witness is a constant reminder of this pivotal lesson.
Seeing my clients implement the strategies we discuss to craft the lives and relationships they’ve always desired—while also learning how to prioritize pleasure—has been incredibly rewarding. It affirms that not only can we write our own stories, but we also have the power to edit, revise, and even start anew. This goes beyond mere therapy or consultancy; it’s about equipping people with the tools they need to be the active authors of their own life narratives. And that’s the cornerstone of everything I do, both personally and through my practice at Intimate Connections PLLC.
