Today we’d like to introduce you to Nuerri Butler.
Nuerri, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey started at the McCoy College of Business at Texas State University, where I discovered just how important marketing is to the growth and longevity of any business. One of the biggest lessons I learned was that there is no single formula for success—effective marketing requires creativity, adaptability, and a deep understanding of people. I took those lessons and applied them to the music industry, becoming an artist manager at just 19 years old.
After graduating in Spring 2019, the world changed almost overnight when COVID-19 hit. While much of the music industry came to a standstill, I saw it as an opportunity to invest in myself. During that time, I focused on building relationships, earning certifications to strengthen my marketing expertise, and learning as much as I could about the business. My goal was simple: when the industry reopened, I wanted to be prepared.
In 2023, I joined SoSouth Music Distribution as an Artist Services Coordinator, where I leveraged my experience and network to help develop marketing strategies and release campaigns for artists. Since then, I’ve been fortunate to grow with the company, serving as Operations Manager before being promoted to General Manager.
Today, my passion is helping artists build sustainable careers while contributing to their overall knowledge of the music business ecosystem. Long-term, my goal is to help improve the infrastructure and opportunities available to artists and other music professionals not only in Houston, but throughout Texas, creating pathways for independent talent to compete and thrive on a national level.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the biggest challenges has been staying committed to building my career in Houston. A lot of people in the music industry feel they need to move to markets like Los Angeles, New York, or Atlanta to find opportunities, but I’ve always been passionate about proving that meaningful careers can be built right here in Texas.
That commitment has required patience and persistence. I’ve spent years building relationships, educating myself, and helping connect local artists and professionals with the resources, strategies, and industry standards that can help them compete on a national level. Rather than viewing it as a limitation, I’ve always seen it as an opportunity to contribute to the growth of Houston’s music ecosystem and help create more pathways for the next generation.
We’ve been impressed with SoSouth Music Distribution, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
SoSouth Music Distribution is one of the leading music distribution companies in Texas, partnering with some of the most respected artists and brands from Houston and beyond. We specialize in both digital and physical music distribution, helping artists get their music to audiences around the world while ensuring they understand and maximize the business behind their careers.
Beyond distribution, we help artists manage royalty collections, publishing administration, release strategy, marketing, and overall career development. One thing that sets us apart is our commitment to transparency and education. We don’t just provide services—we help artists understand how the music industry works so they can make informed decisions and build sustainable careers.
What I’m most proud of is our role in helping bridge the gap between independent artists and industry standards. Our mission is to give artists access to the same tools, resources, and opportunities that have traditionally only been available to major labels, while allowing them to maintain ownership and control of their careers. As Texas continues to produce world-class talent, we’re committed to helping build the infrastructure that supports the next generation of artists and music entrepreneurs.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
“Under promise and over deliver” I’ve found it more efficient to let the work do the talking. In most cases, trying to forcibly sell your services in this industry is a major red flag.
