Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Adams.
Hi Paul, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was a medic for over 35 years and woodworking was my hobby and my escape from a LODD. I started like most just messing around doing crafts which later turned into me making my daughters graduation gifts. Everything I’ve ever done and learned has been self taught
Fast forward I made some crosses and took them to a local furniture store that asked me a few months later if I could make a couple of furniture pieces, which then turned into making custom furniture. About a year later another customer asked me about doing kitchen updates and that turned into me making custom cabinets.
Since then, we are now specialize in kitchen and bath makeovers, built ins, as well as custom furniture, barn doors, epoxy tables and more
For being self taught, we’ve come a long ways in a short amount of time. We’ve been in business since April 2012.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Everyday seems to be a struggle, between customers and employees. Very hard to compete with big business and cash only people. But, I’m not giving up
We’ve been impressed with Adams Unique Wood Designs, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a custom cabinet shop , but we specialize in kitchen and bath makeovers. Looking to progress into maybe being a general contractor one day but loving what I do for now.
I take great pride in what I do and my name actually means something to me (old school values). Over 90% of our work comes from word of mouth and social media.
When folks say, the other guy is cheaper, we just reply, “we’re not the cheapest, but we’re the one that shows up, finishes the job, and doesn’t cost you call backs”!
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
My whole life has been risks, maybe not as many as I should due to financial restrains. Sometimes life forces you into taking the road less traveled and leaving your comfort zones.
Being raised on a ranch and working hard everyday of my life has been tough but very rewarding.
Hardest thing is the balances and getting past the fear of changes and risks. My biggest hold back sometimes I’d my self doubt. Too many folks today go for it and don’t care about the end product or the customer, “we’ll learn as we go and sucks for those we learn on”, but I always put customer first and take great pride in what I do.
