Exploring Life & Business with Paula Carper of Refined Midlife

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paula Carper.

Hi Paula , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in the heart of Cajun country, where food, faith, and family were everything. During my teens, I began noticing how sugar and processed foods negatively impacted my dance and athletic performance. That early awareness sparked something big when my Aunt Violet, who was my dance instructor, helped me and my twin sister make small changes that made a huge difference…AND just like that, my passion for nutrition was born.

Shortly after, I was indoctrinated into diet culture when low-fat diets and cardio was all the rage. I worked my way through college as a fitness trainer. After attending graduate school at Texas Women’s University in the Houston Medical Center, I started a career as a hospital nutritionist. An educator at heart, I learned that hospitals were not the best place for me to make an impact.

After some stressful years in my career, I found myself feeling just like many of my clients do now. I felt fatigued, frustrated, and dismissed as I faced my own hormonal chaos. I couldn’t find the help I needed inside the medical system, so I returned to my roots in nutrition, movement, and what I now know as functional medicine. That shift changed everything.

I left the hospital to start my own private practice to lead others to the same kind of solutions that helped me when everything else failed.

Today, I help high-performing women over 40 navigate perimenopause with clarity and confidence, using personalized strategies that actually work for their unique bodies and busy lives. As a Women’s Health Strategist, I offer women the coaching and strategies I wish I’d has when I was experiencing my own health challenges.

My message to women is that midlife isn’t the beginning of the end. It’s a time to reflect on personalized strategies that work, ditch the “eat less, exercise more” myth and align with your natural bio-rhythms to embrace a powerful new season. Women deserve to feel vibrant, energized, and in control for during this time of life.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There is no such thing as a straight line in the journey of life. Everything has it’s ups and downs. Health and business are no different. One of the biggest blessing of this fact is that it encourages curiosity and drives ingenuity.

Health is not a one-and-done experience. It’s an ongoing dynamic journey. Your body is always interacting with the external environment. This means that some months, even years have brought health challenges that I’ve had to face with new resources. In my personal pursuit of optimal health, I discovered genetic testing which helped me to personalize my diet and lifestyle to my own unique genetics. The success I saw with this inspired me to become a nutrigenomic expert, being personally mentored by one of the leading nutrigenomic experts in the world. I now have the honor of training healthcare practitioners to help their patients create personalized health strategies.

Running my own private practice has been no different. I’d never been trained in how to run a business. This lead me to seek out mentors and coaching along the way. Some of my early attempts at helping clients were marked by success, others by failure. Trial and error is a great teacher and I’m always learning!

My mantra of “Test don’t guess” hold true in business and in my practice. Gathering insights is essential to moving forward with clarity. This is the path to success for everyone I’ve ever met.

I also learned early on is that I can’t help everyone. This helped me to narrow my practice to work with high-performing women 40+ who are struggling with perimenopause symptoms like fatigue, mood swings, brain fog, and belly fat.

I enjoy helping women discover new ways of reaching their health goals so they can continue to make an impact in the world for years to come.

I believe midlife isn’t a downhill slide. It’s an opportunity to live more fully, with intention, vitality, and joy.

At Refined Midlife, we don’t just manage symptoms, we help women step into their most powerful, energized, and authentic selves.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned in this journey is to commit to the process and embrace failures as an opportunity to learn. This is something I encourage my clients to do all the time.

Commitment is the glue that keeps things going even when failures happen, and failures will happen. So many things can go wrong, but the only guarantee that things will go right after failure is to learn from it, get up, and try again. My faith in God has always been an important element of this journey and keeps me going when adversities arise.
