Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Hickey.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
After graduating from Texas A&M University, I spent 7 successful years in production and custom home building in Houston, Texas. After holding positions from construction superintendent to project management to division manager, I decided to start Creekstone Outdoor Living. Growing up on a family farm had instilled a true desire to be self-employed and the beautiful Houston climate was a wonderful place to specialize in outdoor living.
After building a solid foundation with Creekstone Outdoor Living by delivering a high quality product and enjoying the benefits of 100% customer satisfaction, I decided to expand the business. We opened our retail store and showroom in 2016 and our pool division in 2018. Creekstone Outdoor Living provides a true one-stop-shop experience for Houston backyards and has established itself as a premier design build company.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
We have been very fortunate that most of our growth has been very organic and natural. Opening our retail division was the biggest push that we have instrumented internally and it has been very successful. Of course, with any growth there are challenges that you run into. Finding the right people to fuel that growth has been one of those challenges. We have been very fortunate to find qualified and talented people to help us grow Creekstone Outdoor Living. At the same time, we have also had to go thru some hires that did not fit the company culture and vision which is challenging for everyone on the team. Fortunately, we have learned that waiting to find the right person is more important than just finding someone to fit a void. We have put together an awesome team and are poised for even more growth moving forward.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
As a small business owner, I think we tend to forget how far we have come because our eyes are always on the growth and what is ahead of us. It’s so important to look back and reflect on all the hard work that we have put in and how far we have come.
