Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Sepolio and Merih Cengel. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Sarah and Merih met while in graduate school, pursuing their degrees in marriage and family therapy. Being from different backgrounds and countries, it would be the love of therapy (and luck) that brought these two together. Sarah was raised in Houston and changed careers from Information Technology to focus on psychotherapy. The career change was inspired by a loved one’s struggle to attain mental health resources. Through this experience, Sarah decided that she would get licensed as a psychotherapist and become a resource for others.
Merih was raised more than 6,000 miles away in Turkey. She knew at an early age that she wanted to pursue a career in psychotherapy. Merih worked in Europe’s first accredited brain hospital, NPIstanbul, as a licensed Clinical Psychologist for almost ten years. Upon moving to Houston, Merih knew she wanted to expand her training and attained a second master’s degree in marriage and family therapy.
Merih and Sarah envisioned a boutique therapy practice from the ground up still keeping the same core values from their friendship, genuine caring and compassionate support. Therapy and Co is a blend of Merih and Sarah’s unique styles, professional, yet warm and inviting.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
What is a smooth road? It was more of a winding path filled with experiences and lessons. For Sarah, going back to school later in life as a single mom was intimidating. She had two semesters to finish two years’ worth of college credits to start graduate school on time. Somehow, she managed to complete all of her classes by taking nine classes each semester. Merih had already obtained a master’s degree and was completing her doctorate degree when she moved to Houston and started a second master’s program. Balancing two rigorous degree programs while working with two young children proved to be challenging yet rewarding. Merih and Sarah’s work ethics paired with their determination for a high-quality boutique practice and their unwavering support of one another led them through, ultimately opening Therapy and Co.
