Exploring Life & Business with Shana Hill of Evan Howell Properties

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shana Hill.

Shana Hill

Hi Shana, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in the real estate industry in Houston, Texas. My parents were both actively involved in real estate in the 80s when HUD homes were in demand and during the severe market downtown due to the crash in oil prices. My mom worked as a real estate agent and had a great people sense. My dad worked during the day at Houston Lighting and Power to maintain insurance and a stable paycheck for our family – then in the evenings on real estate where he excelled at contracts and negotiations. As the first of their three children, I listened to them talk on the phone a great deal and have strong relationships with contractors to work on investment properties. Today, I work in real estate as a broker and talk on the phone a great deal!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
All transactions are different, and it’s important to remember who you are speaking with when you are communicating with someone about real estate. Some people may only purchase one or two properties in their lifetime, and their level of comfort with repairs, taxes, or the process in general might require more communication. I haven’t always worked in real estate, and it is helpful for me to remember how lost and overwhelming the home search can be when I began to search for my first home purchase. Empathy in the experience. There is a lot of value in working with someone that is experienced in transactions and can help you navigate the various challenges that can arise.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Evan Howell Properties is a family-owned brokerage that specializes in probate sales and property management. We are knowledgeable about the totality of the home, from underground (think buried sewer pipes) to rooftops. We see all different sorts of repairs and work with all different sorts of clients. Our brokerage can be differentiated because we aim to service more narrow regions of properties, which yields a higher level of customer service to our property management clients.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
There is no real certainty in life, and risk is a natural part of our daily lives. My views on risk are essentially are to take them when I think that a potential reward exists. Sometimes, even if we “fail,” we are still learning for the next challenge. Personally and professionally, I welcome change, so I am open to taking more risks because part of the enjoyment of the experience is learning new things.
