Today we’d like to introduce you to Shekinah Burden.
Hi Shekinah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Since I started college, I always had a need for service and mentorship. My college journey has not been easy and it definitely has been a road that has had many highs and lows. It was many times going through tribulations I just thought to give up. Going through homelessness, poverty, depression, you can name it your girl went through it. It wasn’t until the summer of 2022 where I figured it’s more students at Clark Atlanta University that struggle the way I do trying to navigate through college and find that safe space. It took it to God to give me a plan the right set of people and the mindset to finally push forward Own your crown into the world.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not been smooth at all I would be selling myself a fantasy if I told you it was all smiles and rainbows. I created own your crown when I was sleeping in my car and didn’t have no place to stay and I was just writing in my journal about all the dreams and goals that I have and want to accomplish. Since starting we became one of the fastest grown orgs on campus and of course, many administrators did not like the idea of that and yes I had my bumps in the road with trying to do events and give back to the students, but I always persevered to keep going.
As you know, we’re big fans of Own your crown. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Own your crown is an organization that is based on mentorship, service and community. We refer to ourselves as Kings and Queens of the organization to remind everyone no matter who you are you hold your own unique power and are capable of anything you put your mind to. We cater to everyone, no matter who you are, to help each other thrive to their wildest dream while giving that feeling of support to each other.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is when I knew I had a different mindset than everyone else and always wanted to set the trend. My mother didn’t have much and at the time we had to wear uniforms to school I never wanted to look like everyone else I wanted to stand out and be different so every day I would wear a jean jacket to with my uniform as a way of a fashion statement. It got to the point I would try to match my jean jacket with my color sketchers
