Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Caldwell.
Shelby, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After high school, I spent four to five years in and out of college trying to figure out what I wanted to do. I knew I wanted a career where I could make a difference, but I hadn’t found the right fit—and I also knew college wasn’t the path I wanted to continue pursuing.
In 2022, I started researching careers that didn’t require a degree. That’s when I came across the insurance industry. The more I learned about it, the more interested I became, so I earned my personal lines and life insurance license and began applying for jobs. I had no idea where I’d end up or whether I’d love it, but it was a chance I was willing to take.
What started as a job quickly became a passion because I realized I wasn’t just selling insurance; I was helping people protect their homes, businesses, and families while giving them the opportunity to build a lasting legacy for the people they love.
Since joining Farmers Insurance, I’ve had the opportunity to grow from a newly licensed agent into the owner of The Shelby Caldwell Agency, which I opened in May 2026. It was a goal I’d worked toward from the very beginning, and looking back, I truly believe it all happened in God’s perfect timing.
I also couldn’t have done it without my husband. His encouragement and unwavering belief in me gave me the confidence to pursue business ownership. Together, we’ve built a life centered on faith, family, and serving our community, and those same values are the foundation of my agency today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like most business owners, there have been plenty of challenges along the way.
Opening an insurance agency isn’t just about understanding insurance—it’s about building a business that people genuinely want to be part of. My goal wasn’t simply to open the doors; it was to create a culture rooted in integrity, education, and trust. While balancing a long commute and a new chapter of married life, I was building systems, hiring a team that shared those same values, and creating an experience where clients would always feel heard, informed, and genuinely cared for.
One of the biggest adjustments was realizing that, as a business owner, every decision ultimately rests with you. There isn’t always a blueprint or someone with the right answer. I had to learn to trust my instincts, adapt quickly, and make decisions with confidence, even when the path forward wasn’t completely clear.
The insurance industry is always evolving, but one thing never changes: people count on us during some of life’s hardest moments. Whether it’s a house fire, a major accident, or the loss of a loved one, I’ve learned that our job goes far beyond writing policies. It’s about providing guidance, reassurance, and doing what’s right for our clients every step of the way.
On a personal level, one of my greatest obstacles was overcoming the belief that I wasn’t capable of owning a business. Growing up, success didn’t always feel like the expectation. Building this agency has been just as much a journey of personal growth as it has been a professional one. It’s taught me resilience, confidence, and the importance of believing in yourself before anyone else does.
Looking back, I wouldn’t change any of it. Every challenge has shaped the leader I am today and strengthened my commitment to building an agency where both my team and my clients know they’re valued, supported, and always have someone to lean into.
As you know, we’re big fans of Caldwell Agency . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Caldwell Agency is a locally owned Farmers Insurance agency proudly serving families and businesses across Texas. We offer home, auto, life, commercial, specialty, and recreational insurance, but what truly sets us apart isn’t the products we offer; it’s the experience we provide.
We believe insurance should be personalized because every family, home, and business has unique needs. That’s why we take the time to understand each client’s situation, explain coverage in plain language, identify potential gaps, and build protection plans that fit both their lives today and their goals for tomorrow.
We’re proud to represent Farmers Insurance, a company with a long-standing reputation for standing by its customers when they need it most. Insurance isn’t truly tested until a claim happens, and having a trusted carrier, paired with a local agency that knows you personally, makes all the difference. When our clients experience a loss, they aren’t navigating it alone. They have a local team to answer questions, guide them through the claims process, and advocate for them every step of the way.
Above all, we’re proud of the relationships we’ve built within our community. Our goal is simple: to be a trusted advisor who provides honest guidance, exceptional service, and peace of mind so our clients can focus on what matters most.
How do you think about luck?
I like to joke that if I have any luck, it’s usually the kind that teaches me a lesson first.
Looking back, some of what I thought was the worst luck turned out to be the biggest blessings. If life had gone according to my plan, I probably wouldn’t be a business owner today.
Do I think luck plays a role? Maybe a little, but I think hard work, faith, and a healthy dose of stubbornness deserve most of the credit. You can’t control every opportunity that comes your way, but you can control how you respond to it.
I’ve also been incredibly fortunate to have people who believed in me before I fully believed in myself. And if luck has been on my side, I’d say it’s because God has a pretty good sense of humor. The detours I never wanted ended up leading me exactly where I was supposed to be.
Pricing:
- Pricing insurance affects every person differently because insurance is individualized. Two people can own similar homes or drive the same vehicle and still pay very different premiums. That’s because insurance pricing reflects each person’s unique level of risk and coverage needs.
