Hi Shenette, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Well… the last time we spoke in 2019, I shared my journey of discovering my purpose and launching my business to break free from the monotony of corporate America. Little did we know that less than a year later, a worldwide pandemic would hit, halting all social activities. Imagine starting an event planning business just before a pandemic!
Although the pandemic cast a bleak shadow, it provided clarity for my business. I vividly remember the sadness, fearing my new venture wouldn’t survive, especially with the challenges the pandemic posed to the events industry. But I persevered! Throughout the pandemic, I identified my ideal clients, enhanced my business skills with event planning and design certifications, and meticulously executed a master plan to revive my business.
In 2021, I re-entered the industry with renewed vigor, introducing a fresh perspective and revitalized branding; prepared to tackle weddings, corporate events, and social gatherings.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has not been easy; however, I definitely feel more equipped to handle its twists and turns. The biggest challenge in event planning is finding the ideal client. The second biggest challenge is the ideal client finding me! In the events industry, potential clients watch and wait until they need your services. Adding watching and waiting to a two-year lull of couples not being able to meet, fall in love, and get engaged to corporate America transitioning out of the pandemic into a hybrid meeting format – creates the perfect storm on an already winding and scary road!
The great thing about the time I spent leveling up my business skills during the pandemic is that it has definitely helped me navigate these entrepreneurial woes. Networking and showcasing my business purpose while trying different marketing strategies to figure out what works best to attract my ideal clients have helped me flourish, meet those ideal clients, and create memorable events for them.

Teacup Planning & Events is a Houston-based full-service boutique event planning firm with a passion for crafting unforgettable moments. Specializing in weddings, corporate, and nonprofit events, our goal is to ensure clients can be fully present, knowing we’ve covered all logistics.
My passion for planning is backed by 20+ years of multi-million-dollar project management experience. This experience has afforded me the opportunity to travel nationwide and abroad, navigate working under pressure with time and budget constraints, as well as, see and experience multiple cultures, and meet and work alongside a very diverse workforce. With this knowledge and experience under my belt, my team and I are able to provide compassion to our clients while staying calm under pressure and delivering a professional service with comprehensive tools and of course, smiles!
