Exploring Life & Business with Sonya Wyche of Serene Love & Wellness Counseling, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonya Wyche.

Hi Sonya, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As an undergraduate student, I knew I wanted a career centered on helping and guiding others, which led me to earn a B.S. in Psychology. Through my studies, I developed a strong interest in human behavior, mental processes, and emotional well-being. After graduation, I explored roles in both education and mental health, which helped clarify my professional path.

My career purpose became clear while working as an Elementary Special Education Teacher. I frequently referred students to the School Counselor for support with anxiety, social-emotional skills, and organization. Through our collaboration, I learned she was both a School Counselor and a Licensed Professional Counselor, which inspired me to explore the counseling profession more deeply.

In 2013, I earned a M.Ed. in School Counseling from the University of St. Thomas–Houston and valued building meaningful relationships with students, families, and communities. Over time, I realized my growing interest in trauma, anxiety, communication, and mental health disorders aligned more closely with clinical work. This led me to earn a M.Ed. in Counseling and Development with a focus on Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling from Lamar University in 2021.

I am deeply grateful for the mentorship I received from my colleague who supported and guided my journey, including an LPC-S who encouraged me to pursue specialized interests and supported me in establishing my private practice – Serene Love & Wellness Counseling, LLC.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey to becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor was not without challenges. After earning my M.Ed. in School Counseling from the University of St. Thomas–Houston, I was advised that I needed four additional courses to qualify for the National Counseling Exam (NCE). However, those courses were only offered on campus during work hours, which conflicted with my full-time role as a School Counselor.

While some universities offered the required coursework online, they required applicants to have completed their School Counseling degree at that institution. As a result, I was informed that I would need to complete an entirely new 60-hour counseling program to pursue LPC licensure. Although discouraging, I remained committed to my goal, especially as I continued to see the growing need for mental health support in my community.

With faith, family support, and determination, I returned to graduate school full-time in 2019 as a spouse and mother of four, enrolling in the M.Ed. in Counseling and Development with a focus on Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling at Lamar University. During the program, the COVID-19 pandemic created additional obstacles, including the transition of residency requirements to a virtual format and limited availability of practicum sites.

Despite these barriers, I secured a practicum placement under the supervision of an LPC-S during the pandemic—an opportunity many peers were unable to obtain. Through persistence, faith, and resilience, I successfully navigated each challenge and continued forward in my pursuit of becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor.

Now that I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, one of the ongoing challenges has been learning how to effectively market the practice while managing the day to day operations of the business. Building a private practice has required adaptability, problem-solving, and resilience as I balance client care with branding, outreach, administrative responsibilities, and long-term sustainability.

As you know, we’re big fans of Serene Love & Wellness Counseling, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Serene Love & Wellness Counseling is a private therapy practice dedicated to helping individuals, couples, and families heal, grow, and reconnect with themselves and one another. At the core of the practice is the belief that meaningful change is possible when people feel safe, understood, and supported.

The practice specializes in anxiety, trauma, self-esteem, life transitions, relationship challenges, and emotional regulation. Services are grounded in evidence-based approaches while remaining holistic and client-centered. Therapy at Serene Love & Wellness is not one-size-fits-all; each client’s story, strengths, and goals guide the work.

What truly sets the practice apart is the integration of clinical expertise with lived experience across both educational and mental health settings. This background allows for a deep understanding of how stress, trauma, and relational patterns show up in everyday life such as at home, at work, and within families. The approach is warm, direct, and intentional. Clients are supported with both accountability and compassion.

Serene Love & Wellness Counseling, LLC provides secure virtual therapy services to clients in any city across Texas. This service option increases accessibility while maintaining the same level of care, connection, and confidentiality as in-person sessions.

Brand-wise, what I am most proud of is the trust clients place in the practice and the intentionality behind the brand itself. Serene Love & Wellness Counseling was intentionally named using the initials of my name. The name reflects my therapeutic values and the calm, caring, and holistic space I strive to create for clients. These words represent what therapy means to me when providing services to clients and guide how support, healing, and growth are fostered within the practice.

I want readers to know that this practice is about more than managing symptoms. It’s about restoration, empowerment, and helping people build healthier relationships with themselves and others. Whether clients are seeking therapy for healing, growth, or clarity, Serene Love & Wellness Counseling, LLC is a space where they are seen, valued, and supported on their journey forward.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
As a child in elementary school, I was very talkative. I vividly remember being assigned to write lines such as, “I will not talk when the teacher is talking,” sometimes 50 to 100 times as extra homework in first through third grade. Looking back now, it’s a humorous memory. As I got older, however, I unexpectedly became more quiet, reserved, and less outspoken (Smile).

Throughout childhood and adolescence, I was naturally caring and made an effort to be kind and accepting of others. At the time, I didn’t realize that this reflected a nonjudgmental nature. It simply felt natural to me. As the oldest of three children, I often preferred quiet activities like reading, writing poetry, or creating short stories. I was curious about many topics and tended to research answers on my own rather than asking others. While school wasn’t always my favorite, I genuinely enjoyed learning and discovering new information.

Growing up, I had many acquaintances but maintained a small, close knit circle of friends. That circle included a wide range of personalities, which I appreciated. There was a combination of adventure, humor, emotion, confusion, and fun. I’ve always valued diversity and enjoyed experiences like attending parties, concerts, and amusement parks. I appreciated the simplicity of everyday moments.
