Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomika Andrews
Hi Thomika, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey to create this mental health group started with my own tough experiences. When I was younger, I went through some hard times that made me feel sad and alone. These feelings also made it hard for me to get along with my friends and family. I often felt like I was carrying a heavy backpack full of worries that no one else could see.
As I grew older, I wanted to understand why I felt this way. I realized that many other people were going through similar struggles. This made me want to help others who felt lost or hurt, just like I did. To do this, I went through extensive training to learn how to support people dealing with unresolved trauma. I studied different ways to help others heal and feel better.
After my training, I decided to create a safe place where everyone could talk about their feelings and support each other. I reached out to experts and listened to their advice so I could make programs that would be helpful.
Now, this mental health group is a special place where people can come together, share their stories, and find comfort. We create activities that help everyone feel understood and learn how to build better relationships with themselves and others. It’s a place of hope and healing, showing that we can all support each other on our journeys.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Throughout my journey, I faced several obstacles and challenges that tested my resilience and commitment to creating a mental health group. One of the significant struggles was dealing with rough relationship issues. Navigating these difficulties often left me feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about my path forward.
In addition to relationship challenges, I am a parent to three very small children. Balancing their needs with my personal and professional aspirations proved to be a demanding task. The responsibility of caring for young kids while trying to focus on my career was both rewarding and exhausting.
While I was working hard to establish myself in my career, I felt a strong calling toward entrepreneurship. I recognized a significant gap in mental health care within Black and brown communities, and this realization motivated me to take action. I wanted to create a space where people could receive the support they needed, but the journey to entrepreneurship came with its own set of challenges.
Despite these obstacles, I remained determined to move forward. I sought training and resources that would equip me to make a meaningful impact. Each challenge became an opportunity for growth, and I learned to navigate the complexities of my life while keeping my vision for the mental health group in focus.
These experiences shaped my understanding of the importance of mental health care and fueled my passion for helping others in my community.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
From the crises I experienced, I learned valuable lessons about the different forms of therapy and their impact on individuals. While virtual therapy has proven to be a helpful resource for many, I realized that for some, face-to-face therapy remains unmatched in its effectiveness. Personal interactions can foster a deeper sense of connection and trust, which is vital for the therapeutic process.
Additionally, as the world continues to recover from the traumatic effects of COVID-19, it became clear that many people are grappling with their mental health. This collective experience highlighted that at some point, everyone may need support, and seeking help is not only acceptable but essential for healing. Acknowledging this reality has reinforced the importance of accessible mental health services, especially in underserved communities. Understanding these dynamics has further fueled my commitment to creating a supportive environment for those in need.
The stigma surrounding mental health remains a significant barrier in Black and brown communities, often preventing individuals from seeking the help they need. For many, cultural beliefs and societal expectations can create a perception that discussing mental health is a sign of weakness or that one should handle their struggles privately. However, I have observed a gradual shift in attitudes, with more people beginning to accept and openly discuss mental health issues.
This growing acceptance signifies a crucial step toward dismantling the stigma that has persisted for generations. As conversations about mental health become more prevalent and resources become more accessible, it is encouraging to see individuals recognizing the importance of seeking support. The evolving perspective within these communities is a positive indication that we are moving toward a more open dialogue about mental health, which is essential for fostering understanding and encouraging others to prioritize their well-being.
