Exploring Life & Business with Tooba Rehman, MD of Doc And Me Health

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tooba Rehman, MD.

Hi Tooba, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m a board-certified Internal Medicine physician and the founder of Doc and Me Health, a modern membership-based primary care practice. I am also a mom to five children and the journey to opening this practice was certainly not a straight path. Let’s start from the beginning!

My journey has been shaped as much by real life as by formal training. During medical school, I became a mother while balancing the intense demands of training, and by the time I graduated, I had already experienced raising two children while pursuing a medical career. Going through this season of life required intense resilience and adaptability, and I got to learn the importance of compassionate care in a very personal way. It also gave me a deeper understanding of what many patients experience when trying to prioritize their health while juggling work, family, stress, and everyday responsibilities.

I completed my residency from Rosalind Franklin University in Chicago. Throughout my training and career, I remained deeply interested in preventive medicine, chronic disease management, and the connection between lifestyle and long-term health. In addition to clinical work, I was involved in research and published scientific papers, which strengthened my appreciation for evidence-based medicine and lifelong learning.

After training, I worked across several areas of healthcare, including traditional clinical settings, corporate healthcare systems, and alongside insurance-based models wearing several leadership hats. Those experiences gave me valuable insight into how healthcare operates behind the scenes, both the strengths of the system and the areas where patients and physicians often feel frustrated. I saw firsthand how rushed visits, administrative burdens, insurance limitations, and fragmented care could leave patients feeling unheard and physicians feeling burned out.

Over time, I realized I wanted to practice medicine differently. I wanted to create a space where relationships mattered more than volume, where patients could actually reach their physician, and where preventive care and education were not treated as an afterthought.

That vision eventually led me to create Doc and Me Health in Houston. This practice is built around a more personal and accessible model of care, one that prioritizes continuity, meaningful conversations, prevention, and simplicity. Instead of focusing on moving through patients quickly, we focus on understanding the full picture of a person’s health and helping them make sustainable changes that fit their real lives.

As a physician, entrepreneur, wife, and mother, building this practice has been deeply personal for me. I wanted to create the kind of healthcare experience I would want for my own family!! Compassionate, trustworthy, modern, and approachable!

Outside the clinic, I also share health education through social platforms as “The Unconventional Doc,” where I discuss practical wellness, nutrition, mindset, and preventive health in a relatable way. I’ve written books, hosted community wellness events, and created educational content because I believe healthcare conversations should extend beyond the walls of the exam room.

Today, Doc and Me Health continues to grow through community relationships, patient trust, and a shared belief that healthcare can still feel personal.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road.

One of the biggest challenges was deciding to step outside of the traditional path many physicians are expected to follow. Medicine is a very structured field, and there can be pressure to stay within conventional systems even when you recognize their limitations. Starting my own practice meant taking on uncertainty, financial risk, and the responsibility of building something from the ground up while still caring for patients full-time.

Another challenge was learning that running a healthcare business requires a completely different skill set than practicing medicine. Medical school teaches you how to diagnose and treat illness, but not necessarily how to build a brand, lead a team, market ethically, navigate operations, or create a patient-centered experience from scratch. There were many moments where I had to learn in real time.

I also faced the challenge of balancing authenticity with professionalism online. Sharing health education on social media can be incredibly rewarding, but it also requires thoughtfulness and responsibility. I wanted to create content that was approachable without oversimplifying medicine or losing scientific integrity.

Perhaps the biggest lesson has been understanding that meaningful healthcare takes time. Building trust with patients, building a reputation in the community, and building a business aligned with your values doesn’t happen overnight. There were moments of self-doubt, exhaustion, and growing pains, but those experiences also helped shape the practice into what it is today.

What keeps me motivated is hearing patients say they finally feel listened to, understood, or empowered about their health. Those moments remind me why I started.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Doc And Me Health?
Doc And Me Health is a modern adult primary care practice focused on preventive medicine, chronic disease management, and helping patients create sustainable lifestyle changes that support long-term wellness.

What makes our practice different is the experience we try to create. We believe healthcare should feel collaborative, educational, and personalized rather than rushed or transactional. We take time to help patients understand the “why” behind their health, not just hand them instructions.

Our practice especially resonates with busy professionals, individuals navigating chronic health concerns, and patients looking for a more proactive approach to wellness. We combine evidence-based medicine with practical lifestyle guidance in a realistic and compassionate way.

In addition to clinical care, we also focus heavily on community education. Through workshops, wellness events, books, and digital content, we aim to make health information more accessible and less intimidating. One thing I’m especially proud of is creating an environment that feels approachable. Patients often tell us they feel comfortable asking questions and having honest conversations here, and that means a lot to me.

At the heart of the brand is the belief that healthcare should empower people, not overwhelm them.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I think entrepreneurship in medicine is inherently a form of risk-taking.

One of the biggest risks I took was stepping away from a more traditional physician path to build something aligned with my own vision of healthcare. There’s comfort in staying within established systems, but I knew I wanted to create a practice where patient education, prevention, and lifestyle conversations were prioritized in a deeper way.

Another risk was putting myself out there publicly through content creation and community engagement. Physicians are traditionally trained to stay very formal and behind the scenes, so sharing my voice online, writing books, and building a personal brand felt vulnerable at first. But I also realized that education today happens far beyond clinic walls.

For me, risk-taking is less about being reckless and more about being willing to grow beyond familiarity. Some risks work immediately, others require adjustment, but I believe meaningful progress usually comes from being willing to step into uncertainty with intention and purpose.
