Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyla-Simone Crayton.
Hi Tyla-Simone, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
The dream of becoming the youngest-ever Sauce Boss started when I was just eight years old. My favorite wing place closed down in NYC and I asked my Mom if I could try to recreate the flavor by playing with ingredients in our kitchen. With the assistance of my Mother, we created something even better. This was the birth of Sienna Sauce. At that time (2011), we were still living in Brooklyn, NY. My Mother and I would make the sauce for wing Wednesdays with the girls, family functions or just wing night with Mom and Me. Unbeknownst to us, we would be bottling sauce to sell to the masses in just six short years (2017).
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Being a young, black, woman entrepreneur, in this world is not an easy ride. Through my career, I have had to struggle like anyone else. Standing out in a populated industry has been hard. But I really try to keep my focus on how I can make my consumers happy. Maintaining a small business has its challenges. It has not been a smooth road but I would not trade it for anything in the world.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Sienna Wings (Now Sienna Sauce) is a family-based business that was established on April 7, 2017 in Sienna, TX. The concept of selling wings out of our home started over a kitchen conversation. The overall goal was to package the sauce (created by Tyla-Simone Crayton when she was just 8 years old) and get it on the shelves of grocery stores around the globe. So, cooking and selling Sienna Wings every Friday out of our house-hold, was how Sienna Sauce began to become a house-hold name.
At only 17, I can speak to my business like CEO’s of Fortune 500 companies. I am continuing to take the condiments industry by storm while disrupting a very male dominated industry. My goal is to change the way we use and buy sauce and give society a swift kick on how we view sauce buyers. Sienna Sauce is a versatile non-bias product that can be used as a dip, marinade, glaze or an added ingredient to any recipe. With a sauce being so versatile, it frees up space in your refrigerator. Sienna Sauce is classified as a BBQ sauce (according to the ingredients). My product is not a ketchup or a BBQ sauce, this is Sienna Sauce! The award winning Sienna Sauce comes in three delicious flavors for every palette. Tangy (the original flavor) which is my favorite, Lemon Pepper and Spicy. The Lemon Pepper and Spicy flavors are made with the original flavor being the base of those Sauces. Sienna Sauce has WOWed so many customers, we had to create a subscription program so the Sienna Sauce addicts wouldn’t run out of their favorite sauces.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Research everything. Any question you have is google-able and nothing is new under the sun. Learn from those who have paved the way and put your own sauce on it. That is what I did. I had many questions, and I seeked out that information. Another piece of advice that I would share is, find a mentor. That is something I wish I had when I first started out. My mentor has been a tremendous help for Sienna Sauce and has taught me so much. Because of that, I avoided a lot of headaches.
