Exploring Life & Business with Yulander Taylor of Holistically You

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Yulander Taylor, ND., CHAP.

Hi Yulander, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In 2008, after a wellness exam, my Primary care physician had concerns about my low white blood count which was 2.9. After several testing, bone marrow biopsy and extensive bloodwork every week I was told that the reason for the low white blood count known as Mild Leukopenia, which is common in African American women. From three opinions two of which were an oncologist and the third was a rheumatologist. I was wrongly diagnosed with Lupus, and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

In between doctors’ appointments, test and follow-ups. I started my research on holistic health and alternatives. I invested in classes, books, and offsite training.

In 2018, having another routine wellness exam which requires blood work and this time both white and red blood count dropped tremendously which again raised concerns again with my Healthcare Provider. She referred me back to a different oncologist which gave me a diagnosis of Lupus, Sjögren’s, and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

In the past, I’ve had issues with fibroids which caused excessive blood loss during my monthly irregular cycles. I had a conversation with my Gynecologist who knew my history and we talked about the quality of life and opinions. I had a conversation with my husband Dexter and we prayed about it and we scheduled the surgery. After having a hysterectomy and removing five fibroids two the sizes of eggs and three the size of strawberries. In the pathology report, it showed no signs of cancer or any other growth.

Shortly after, I started on an essential oil book and went back to school and graduated in May 2021 with a doctorate as a Naturopathic Doctor. Within two months of earning my doctorate, I attend and completed a chaplaincy program and was asked to create and teach the health and wellness program nationally and internationally. Each time I was faced with a health challenge it pushed me more and more into holistic health and wellness.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The obstacles/challenges were very overwhelming to the point that I just wanted to quit and throw in the towel. I started my business Holistically You in April 2012 in Old Town Spring, Texas and in a conversation with a lady that had been in Old Town Spring for years told me in a face to face conversation that I would never make it because it’s too many people doing what I was doing at the time which was reflexology, ear candling and detox. I’m glad I didn’t listen or take to heart what she said. After being there a year, the owners sold the property and new owners raised the rent three times the amount, which was extremely expensive and the only op was to move.

After moving out I did house calls only to clients that I knew, so I could be active in my calling. I found a location about a year later in 2015 only to have Hurricane Harvey to hit which caused a lot of damage and lead to me moving everything back home and doing house calls to my consistent clients.

At times I questioned God and my gift because it felt like a joke after experiencing the haves and haves not of a location. I honestly felt like people would say that I was unstable just like my business with the inconsistency of location.

A greater obstacle indeed to have an amazing gift, without the financial support to obtain a location or space to obtain clients.

As you know, we’re big fans of Holistically You. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
