Today we’d like to introduce you to AARON RAINER.
Hi AARON, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Aaron Rainer, DVM, MPH, and I am a veterinarian, public health professional, and entrepreneur. I founded Horizon Veterinary after nearly two decades working across every level of veterinary medicine, from small independent clinics to emergency hospitals, leadership roles, and large corporate systems.
I earned both my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Master of Public Health degrees from Texas A&M University. Early in my career, I became deeply involved in organized veterinary medicine and eventually served as President of the Texas Veterinary Medical Association. That experience gave me a front row view of how policy, economics, and consolidation were reshaping animal care.
Over time, I saw growing gaps in access, affordability, and trust. Veterinary care was becoming more expensive and less personal, while veterinarians themselves were burning out. Horizon Veterinary was created as a response to those challenges. I wanted to build a modern, independent clinic that combined high quality medicine, transparency, and technology with strong community roots.
Horizon is locally owned and collaboratively led by licensed veterinary professionals, with a leadership structure intentionally designed to elevate both medical excellence and operational strength.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. Building an independent practice in an industry increasingly dominated by corporate ownership comes with real challenges, including financing, staffing, real estate, and perception.
Choosing independence often means walking away from lucrative opportunities in favor of long-term values. There were operational hurdles, personal risks, and moments that required starting over. One of the biggest challenges has been proving that independent practices can still deliver modern, high level care without corporate ownership.
Horizon Veterinary has had to demonstrate that transparent pricing, timely access to care, advanced diagnostics, and strong clinical standards can coexist within a locally owned model. The trust of the community has validated that approach.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Horizon Veterinary is a locally owned, independent veterinary clinic built to deliver high quality, modern medicine without the corporate model that increasingly dominates animal care. We provide comprehensive primary care, surgery, diagnostics, and thoughtfully designed after hours urgent care appointments, all within a structure that prioritizes trust, transparency, and access.
What sets Horizon apart is both how we practice medicine and how we are led. Our clinic is collaboratively led by two licensed veterinary technicians serving as Operations Director and Nursing Director, alongside me as owner, veterinarian, and Chief of Medicine and Surgery. This ensures that decisions about patient care, team workflow, and business operations are guided by licensed professionals who are actively involved in day to day care delivery.
Clinically, we focus on strong fundamentals done exceptionally well. That includes preventative care, internal medicine, surgery, diagnostics, and urgent care support when families need timely answers. We emphasize clear communication, realistic options, and transparency around pricing so clients can make informed decisions without pressure.
Brand wise, what I am most proud of is the culture we have built. Horizon is grounded in three pillars: kindness, transparency, and authenticity. Those values guide how we treat clients, how we treat pets, and how our team treats one another. Loyalty and trust are not marketing concepts for us; they are operational standards.
What I want readers to know is that Horizon Veterinary exists to serve the community it lives in. We are locally owned, accountable, and intentionally designed to be a place where pet owners feel heard, veterinary professionals feel supported, and quality care remains accessible.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is loyalty and trust.
In both veterinary medicine and entrepreneurship, those are never assumed. They are earned through consistent actions and values driven decisions. At Horizon Veterinary, loyalty and trust are built through three core pillars: kindness, transparency, and authenticity, and those principles apply equally to clients, patients, and our internal team.
Kindness means showing empathy, respect, and support to clients and to one another, especially in a demanding profession. Transparency means clear communication, honest expectations, and shared understanding, whether it involves medical decisions, business realities, or accountability. Authenticity means creating an environment where people can practice medicine and work together in ways that align with their values rather than corporate pressure.
My goal is to embody those values for our staff and to build a culture where team members extend the same kindness, transparency, and authenticity to each other. When those values are present internally, trust forms naturally. And when trust exists, loyalty follows, not just to a workplace, but to the people alongside you and the community you serve. That is the foundation Horizon Veterinary was built on and the standard we work to uphold every day.
