**My Journey: From Engineer to Entrepreneur**
My name is Abdallah Dwikat, but most people call me “AD,” a nickname derived from the initials of my first and last names. I moved to the United States in 2022, seeking better opportunities for myself and my family. As an engineer, I was eager to find a role where I could thrive, but the journey was far from easy.
Initially, I worked as a driver for Uber and Lyft. It was a decent job, but I couldn’t see myself in that line of work long-term. Eventually, I received an offer to work as an engineer, but the salary was nowhere near the standard. Without a degree from the U.S., companies often exploit skilled workers like me, offering pay that’s not even 40% of the usual rate. It was barely enough to survive.
When my driver accounts got deactivated, I was left feeling defeated. I didn’t know what to do, and it was hard to stay hopeful. Taking a leap of faith, I decided to move from Chicago to Houston, praying that God had a plan for me. Despite my doubts, I never gave up.
Once in Houston, I started searching for new opportunities. One day, I came across someone selling a barbershop. Although I knew nothing about the industry, I decided to do my research. I learned that to succeed in any business, you need to fully understand it, master the details, and strive to be the best. I began reading, watching videos, and immersing myself in everything related to the barbering world.
A friend connected me to someone who owned a barber school in Houston. I visited the school to gather more information, and before I knew it, I was excitedly enrolling as a student. I decided to pivot my career and become a barber. Usually, the program takes about a year to complete, but I pushed myself and finished in just eight months.
It wasn’t easy. English is my second language, and there were countless challenges along the way. Yet, I stayed focused on my goals. After graduating, I waited for my physical license to arrive and began job hunting. I approached four different shops, but no one was interested in hiring me. It was disheartening, but I kept trying.
Eventually, I visited a barbershop near my home. The owner didn’t have any openings but mentioned a shop an hour away that might be hiring. Despite the distance, I decided to seize the opportunity. I promised to prove myself and started working there seven days a week, determined to excel. Within six months, I became the top barber—the fastest and most skilled in the shop. My dream was becoming a reality, and my confidence was growing.
As I honed my craft, I began thinking about owning my own business. Over the next six months, I focused on learning how to run a successful barbershop. I realized that building strong relationships with customers is key—communication and connection are vital. I made friends with my clients, earned their trust, and gained invaluable inspiration from their support.
One day, a customer came in for a haircut with his wife, who happened to be a realtor. Prior to this, I had struggled to find a location for my own shop, even with the help of two realtors. Nothing seemed to work out. But I believe that when you trust in God’s plan and keep trying, good things will come your way. To my surprise, the customer’s wife called me later to say she had found the perfect spot for my barbershop.
It was exactly what I wanted. The process of applying and getting approved happened so quickly it felt like a miracle. Within ten days, I was submitting all the necessary paperwork, and in just 15 days, my life completely transformed. I officially became a business owner.
Today, I run my own barbershop and strive to grow within this amazing community. I love providing excellent service, seeing my clients leave with smiles, and knowing I’ve made a difference in their day.

It was hard for me to take the risk and choose a different career path than what my major was, also even when i got into the business, i needed to make sure that i can find the right location, also know how to build relationships with people, how communicate, give the best service especially with the competition in this industry,
