Hidden Gems: Meet Adam Rust of Helix Insurance Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Rust.

Hi Adam, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My wife and I worked for liberty mutual for over 8 years. I started as an intern with Liberty Mutual and worked under a Top producing agent. I was the number one agent in the world for liberty mutual multiple years in a row as well as in the top 3 agents out out of 45,000 employees every year I was there. I won every single award you could win with them. I attribute all of my success to God, very hard work, and having the opportunity to get paid to help people! After Liberty mutual my wife and I were looking for something where we could access more carriers in the insurance business so our customers would have more options. We finally opened Helix Insurance Group which is a brokerage. From 2017-2025 Helix Insurance Group has been voted the best insurance company on the island for “galvestons best of the islands awards” over 5 times. We have over 500 5 star google reviews and Helping people is at the very top of our Core values. With over 14 employees we have a team that loves to serve people and be helpful. In today’s business world it is hard to find loyal and passionate people so we are very blessed to have such a strong team. We are even more blessed to have strong leaders in our organization that continues to help us grow year over year. We also own multiple farms in Oklahoma in which we raise Black Angus and Waygu cattle. It is a place we go to relax and unwind from the hustle and bustle of the city. We also sell beef from our farm straight to consumers tables and deliver all over! The name of our Beef is Thirteen Farms! We have a little girl who is 2 1/2 years old and growing up way to fast!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No it has not. We had a business partner who we had lots of trouble with early on that caused us to complete a huge buyout that would have crippled most companies that young. My wife is the CEO and we have been fortunate enough to be able to work beside each other since 2012 so we plan and execute really well together. Covid was a huge struggle as well for us. With a business that was primarily “in office” we had to send all of our employees home and work from home for 2 years. We made it through that and now have a hybrid team some are in office and several are in other countries including the Phillipines, Nicaragua, and Puerto Rico. There is high turnover in insurance sales so we have constantly called people up or called them out when they don’t rise up to our core values and uphold the standard of customer service we adhere to! We have very high standards and we won’t compromise those for anyone!

As you know, we’re big fans of Helix Insurance Group. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Helix Insurance Group is a Personal and Commercial Insurance Brokerage with over 100 companies to shop from. Unlike the traditional captive insurance agency Helix is able to custom Taylor insurance plans for our customers by shopping nearly every company in the marketplace. We specialize in anything coastal or flood insurance along the Texas Coast. We write insurance in Texas and Louisiana. We sell auto, home, life insurance, annuities, boats, toys, commercial insurance for businesses and bonds! What sets us apart is our sales process and attention to detail along with a “Ritz Carlton Customer Service Approach”! Our team is very attentive, hard working, and passionate about helping people! Graduating from the number one entrepreneurship and sales program at the university of Houston taught me a lot about business and what not to do. There are just so many things they didn’t teach me that the real world did. I came up with the name “Helix” because it’s a dna strand which incorporates our customers, friends, family, and team! All of this together represents the “Helix Family”. I give out my personal cell phone number to every customer I talk to because I can’t stand to call a 1-800 number so I want them to be able to access me at all times.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
National Geographic is making a movie about the worst storms in History and just did a 6 hour interview with me on me saving 577 people in my airboat during hurricane Harvey. I like best about Houston with what I saw during that tragic event. No matter what the news suggested and said our city came together to help millions that were affected in a 500 year storm. When the police and fire rescue couldn’t keep up or help the citizens of Houston and surrounding areas stepped in and saved thousands with their own boats and resources. I think my least favorite thing about Houston now days is the congestion. There are just getting to be too many people for me.
