Hidden Gems: Meet Adiah Oreyomi of Nurse Defense Firm

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adiah Oreyomi.

Hi Adiah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I wanted to be a medical doctor growing up, but I also had a sense for fighting injustice. My father advised me that my strengths in school would be best served in becoming an attorney. I agreed with him and decided that I would become an attorney.

Once I graduated from law school, I reached out to a lawyer who I worked for while in college. This lawyer worked in medical and professional license defense. He hired me, and I worked in various professions during my tenure with the firm.

While at this firm, I found that I was able to combine both of my interests in medicine and the law. I also found that I had more of a passion for nurses than the other professions I worked with. I believe this was due to the fact that my mother was a nurse herself and had been for over thirty years and because the nurses’ stories were more compelling for me.

Once I left the firm, I started my own law firm, where I work exclusively to defend nurses and their licenses.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. Many nurses who are under investigation with the Texas Board of Nursing do not know that they do not have to fight alone to protect their licenses. They are usually not aware of their rights during this process, nor are they aware of how to protect themselves and their license.

The biggest hurdle that I am still fighting to overcome is how to make more nurses aware that they have rights while under investigation and that they should exercise these rights.

I am not advocating that all nurses are innocent of whatever they are being accused of, however, all nurses deserve a fair opportunity to defend themselves fully and if necessary, only accept the appropriate discipline.

My hope is that avenues such as this magazine will assist nurses in becoming more aware of the fact that they have rights and can have someone fight for their rights.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Nurse Defense Firm is a law firm that is dedicated exclusively to representing nurses when they have a matter before the TBON. Our law firm is different than most because we focus on only one area of law and on only one type of clientele. Similar law firms branch out and represent doctors, teachers and other professions, but we are passionate about nurses, so we only represent them.

We defend nurses when they are under investigation, or need to renew their nursing license but have a negative report to make to the TBON that could impact their license. We also represent nurses who need to permanently move their nursing license from another state to the State of Texas, but they may have something in their history that could make this effort problematic. We represent nurses who have had their nursing licenses revoked or are looking to have their licenses reinstated. Finally, we represent individuals who are either in nursing school or are thinking of becoming nursing school students but have a past that could prevent them from becoming licensed nurses.

How do you think about luck?
I do not believe in luck. I believe in being a driven individual who works to meet other driven individuals to learn and benefit from and vice versa. Just as important, I believe that being generous with resources, empathetic, respectful and knowledgeable about the area of work one undertakes has great benefits both personally and professionally.
