Hidden Gems: Meet Alexis Obialo of Ally Kelechi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Obialo.

Hi Alexis, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When I was 11, my granny sat my sister and me down in front of her old Brother sewing machine and taught us to sew. We started with pillows, which are harder than you’d think when you’re a kid. My first heart-shaped pillow looked more like a lopsided mitten.

Fast-forward to the 2020 lockdown. I picked up sewing again and started making handbags. I made so many that I opened an Etsy shop. During that time, I was also thrifting regularly, always trying to find unique pieces, but I struggled to find pieces that accurately reflected my personality. So I decided to try making my own.

Even while I was in school pursuing my Finance degree, on the side, I was building up those skills and learning the basics of pattern making, dart manipulation, and fabric all through the internet and my own curiosity.

The summer after graduation, I put on my first fashion show. I cast the models, made every piece, found the venue, and raised the funds myself. It was alot of work. But when that show came together? It clicked. That night, I knew I was a fashion designer, not just a sewing hobbyist.

Since then, I’ve been taking my designs seriously, and having a lot of fun growing the business one stitch at a time.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely been a challenge trying to grow my business.

For one, finding an audience that shares my love for fashion has been a real challenge. There are so many brands out there, and I’m constantly asking myself: How can I stand out? How do I stay true to me?

Another big struggle: balancing my 9-to-5 with my brand. Some days, I come home full of energy, ready to sew or plan. Other days, I just want to collapse on the couch. And honestly, sometimes I do.

But here’s what I’ve learned: I don’t need to be perfect every single day. I just need to keep showing up, put my best foot forward, and grab the opportunities that come my way. The road hasn’t been smooth, but those bumps have taught me more than a smooth road ever could.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My brand sells women’s clothing, specializing in corsets and dresses. Every piece is made by me, by hand. I also offer custom-made designs.

Right now, I’m focusing the business on bridal wear, specifically for the bride’s wedding reception, engagement photos, or even the engagement dinner. There’s something magical about making a bride feel unforgettable on one of the biggest nights of her life.

What sets me apart? I design for real life. I think about sitting, stretching, eating, and dancing. My clothes have to work in the real world, not just on a hanger.

Also, from sketching to sewing to shipping, it’s all me. That means every piece gets the attention it needs. I believe in slow fashion: every piece gets the care it needs, while also avoiding unnecessary waste.

I’m proud of how far I’ve come. Starting a business isn’t easy, and there are no shortcuts to success. But I constantly have new ideas that I’m excited to try.

I want readers to know that I do custom-made clothing for any occasion. It doesn’t have to be wedding-related. If you have a vision, I’d love to bring it to life.

If readers want to find me, they can check out www.allykelechi.com or @allykelechi on Instagram. I release small collections a few times a year, and I tease behind-the-scenes content constantly: failed prototypes, fabric finds, and the occasional sewing disaster. Because it’s not all pretty. But it’s always real.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Patience. And trusting my own gut. If you believe in something, don’t let anyone sway your decision. People will doubt you. Keep going anyway.
