Hidden Gems: Meet Aminat Adams of Amope Unlimited

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aminat Adams.

Hi Aminat, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started when I use to live in California 2018, I love to travel, but there was something different about Texas. Texas has EVERYTHING. I went to one of the African Market, Southwest Farmers Market to be specific and it was love at first sight. I was amazed at all the Nigerian snacks and food I saw there. So I would buy them and take it to California with me. Am talking about 2-3 luggage’s full of goodies. I didn’t see it as business at that time because I just love catching flights and buying good things. I later moved to Houston in 2019. When the pandemic hit in 2020, I was forced to find something to do. I tried different things. One day my Uncle (Ky) called me and asked if I could help him find PONMO IJEBU, not the regular Ponmo that they sell in African stores. I was already known as the #1 plug for Nigerians.

So I went hunting for Ponmo Ijebu. I found it after like three days of searching. I was so excited and I had to post it. I am very much active on my Snapchat (Amopeammiebabe1), so I joking posted it on my Snapchat 😩. And Just like that orders started rolling in, from ponmo to snails and many more. I was not ready to start the business but I couldn’t say no to my people. I started May 1st, 2020, and before the end of the month, I started driving 20+ hrs with cars full of product to another state for delivery. I make sure I travel to 1 state a month to meet with my customers and have fun with them while doing business. I have a physical store on Harwin, 7457 Harwin drive, suite 258, Houston, Texas 77036. People can order online and have it shipped out or come to the store,

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nooooooooo, not smooth at allllllll. The business grows day by day. And things people want I can find them anymore in the country. So I started shipping things in from Nigeria and that is very expensive. Emphasis on expensive. Since May 2020 – Now I have had over 3 million Naira loss, that’s close to $7000. But we muveee.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I sell pretty much everything that as to do with Nigeria goodies, food products, games, things of culture. Am known for the amount of Unique things I sell; like Kilishi, Agbalumo, etc. I think what sets me apart from others is the varieties of things I sell and the way I incorporate E-commerce which allows me to ship WORLDWIDE. And also the fact that almost 90% of things I sell I haven’t seen them in almost 11 years, just like 70% of my customers. My most proud brand would be my KILISHI and PALMWINE.
