Hidden Gems: Meet Amy Adams of LifeStem Regenerative Medicine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Adams

Hi Amy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been practicing interventional pain management for 25 years. In the early 2000’s I became interested in the exciting new field of regenerative medicine, which involves using the body’s own proteins and cells to heal itself. I performed my first regenerative medicine procedure on a patient whose rotator cuff injury did not respond to conventional therapy in 2013. When that patient got complete relief of her pain we were both hooked! I went on to perform other procedures that were almost uniformly more effective and longer lasting than the conventional steroid injections and physical therapy alone. In 2019 my own back went out on me so badly that I could not work, so I flew to Denver to have a regenerative medicine doctor that I knew do a procedure on my back. To this day, almost 6 years later, my back is still 90% better than it was prior to that procedure. My own results were so impressive that I stopped doing conventional pain medicine and dedicated my practice to the field of orthobiologics, which is the use of regenerative medicine procedures to treat orthopedic and spine problems. At the time, I was practicing in Savannah, Georgia. I was later recruited to Houston to become the medical director of 9 regenerative medicine clinics in Houston and DFW. In July of last year, I opened my own independent practice on I-10 West just outside the 610 loop in the Memorial City area with Destin Stone, my physician’s assistant, and Elsa Vasquez, our medical and lab assistant. I was recently in the first class of doctors to achieve certification in regenerative medicine by the American Board of Interventional Pain Physicians.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I have an uncanny knack for starting new practices in the worst possible economic climates! My Savannah LifeStem practice opened its doors in late 2019, right before COVID hit. We opened our doors in Memorial City in July 2024, right before the presidential election and I quickly learned that most businesses slow down during the heat of a presidential campaign. We are so fortunate to be on solid footing now, which is a testament to how effective this treatment is.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We specialize in the exciting field of regenerative medicine, which uses proteins and stem cells from your own body to relieve pain and rebuild healthy tissue. Specifically, we treat a wide range of orthopedic and spine problems, including arthritis, neck pain, back pain, headaches, and soft tissue injuries (sprains, strains, torn tendons, plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and other nerve entrapments for example). We have undergone extensive training in the latest techniques. We perform a comprehensive initial evaluation that almost always includes some type of imaging in order to make an accurate diagnosis. We then address the root cause of the patient’s problem in a very comprehensive treatment plan that is tailored specifically for the individual. The treatment may include platelet-rich plasma or stem cells that have been harvested from the patient’s own fat or bone marrow. We perform all injections under either ultrasound or x-ray guidance, and our treatments are compliant with FDA guidelines for regenerative medicine.

Stem cells are generating a lot of buzz, and there are so many clinics offering some form of regenerative medicine services in Houston now, but it really is the wild, wild west out there and unfortunately, patients have a hard time knowing who to trust. We are proud to be one of the few clinics with the training and experience needed for the best outcomes. We back that up by participating in DataBiologics, which is a national registry of patient outcomes in regenerative medicine. As an example, we perform a specific type of treatment for knee osteoarthritis that less than 5% of regenerative medicine clinics in the world are capable of offering. This technique stretches the pain relief that can be obtained out from 2 years to 15 or more years in the majority of cases. The result of this special technique is that many patients can often avoid a knee replacement entirely.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t really believe in luck. We have been blessed with the skills we were given and the ability to work hard advocating for our patients. In my experience of almost 30 years, once the word gets out that we base everything we do on rock-solid integrity, always putting our patients’ best interests ahead of our own, happiness and success follow.
