Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Romero.
Hi Andrea, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and I have had a passion for cooking for as long as I can remember. I remember, since I was little, sitting at my grandmother’s table and watching her cook for both of us, I loved that. The first approach to confectionery was when I was approximately 13 years old, making cookies for my family. Little by little, I developed a talent and a vocation that I would not realize until many years later.
I have always liked the happiness in the eyes of the people who try my sweets. Since I was a teenager, I was in charge of making birthday cakes for my family. I am very meticulous with that aspect. I like to focus completely on the birthday person and their tastes in order to create the dream birthday cake.
When I turned 17, I started studying psychology. Which allowed me to have tools to empathize with and understand other people.
At the age of 21, I was forced to leave my country. I didn’t know what to expect or how difficult it would be to start from scratch. For 3 years, I was working on settling down and getting used to my new home. In 2020, during the crisis of that year, I started cooking with love again. At that moment, she felt lost, the possibility of continuing my career as a psychologist looked further and further away; that’s when I first thought of dedicating myself to pastry.
I started watching many free videos, and little by little I was having possibilities of doing paid courses. Currently I have done more than 15 courses and certifications.
Cooking for my loved ones has always been my way of showing love, and Andy’s bakery was born as a hobby to show affection for my new friends and my new environment. Time after my account that I could make happy not only my friends but also those I didn’t know. Starting my business scared me a lot, the constant support of my friends and partner was what pushed me to take the step. I had many doubts, and like everyone, I started with a few resources but with great enthusiasm.
Today Andy’s bakery does not stop growing; day by day, I am pleasantly surprised, and I am even filled with happiness when someone writes to me saying that they would like a birthday cake, and much more when they write to tell me that they love our product. I consider myself a person in constant learning; I strive every day to offer my community the quality and variety they deserve in their special events.
Our dream is to have a space where we can receive our clients, a warm place to feel at home. We hope this dream comes true soon, meanwhile, we will continue baking to see those eyes of happiness in the people who try my desserts, honoring my roots and integrating them with the culture of Houston, which is my new home. And always honoring our mission, achieve the perfect balance between love, art, and cooking.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Andy’s Bakery started in 2020, but soon I was overwhelmed by the number of responsibilities I had at home and with the goal of being completely independent, I put my business on hold. I had many moments of doubt; carrying out a venture alone was a more demanding responsibility than I thought. I had talent and a good product, but I was unaware of all the accounting and logistics work. In 2022, I was able to share this dream with someone else, my partner; together, we have brought my dream to life again; we studied the administrative part that a business needs, and until now, we have not rested because our goals are to remain constant until we become Andy’s Bakery our livelihood and family business.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Andy’s Bakery is a business specialized in creative confectionery. We are proud to offer the client a variety of desserts that go from a weekend craving to a wedding cake or birthday parties. We strive to have an accessible and quality service for all types of budgets. I think our difference from the rest of the industry is the balance we manage to achieve between quality and great taste. Whoever tries our products is amazed at how a dessert can be delicious without being cloying or having too many additives that ultimately affect our health.
We are known for offering sweets with high-quality standards. Rich but elegant cakes, our product has a soul, it speaks for itself, it lets itself be loved, and to try it once is to want to eat it as many times as possible.
We love to innovate, you can bring us an untraditional design, a new presentation, and we will do our best to make it happen. Like an alfajor cake, which is literally a giant alfajor or a completely personalized brownie for that special person.
We are also very meticulous with details; we want trying our products to be an unforgettable experience, that is why we have different types of packaging, logistics, and special decorations. For example: if you ask us for a surprise birthday cake, we will pack it in a box and wrap it in tape. We can offer you personalized cards with dedication and even a candle, just like a gift. So that the person has the illusion not only of eating a tasty dessert but of feeling the love and dedication that the person sends through us.
In addition to desserts, on popular dates such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Christmas, and Thanksgiving we like to surprise with something innovative; that is why we also offer surprise breakfast and Christmas artisan bread.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
For Andy’s bakery, the opinion of our customers is very important; buying from us and giving us your advice is an invaluable support and resource for us since we consider ourselves a company in constant improvement. Our presence on networks or in conversations with your family and friends is also important to us. Recommending us will always be the best support you can give us.
