Hidden Gems: Meet Arpit Kumar of Richmond Dental Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Arpit Kumar.

Hi Arpit, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey began in India, where I completed my Bachelor of Dental Surgery and developed a strong foundation in clinical dentistry. From early on, I was passionate not only about treating patients, but also about understanding how oral health impacts overall health and quality of life.

Like many immigrants pursuing the American Dream, I came to the United States with a vision of expanding my education and creating greater opportunities to serve patients at the highest level. I first earned my Master of Public Health from West Chester University of Pennsylvania, where I gained a broader understanding of public health, preventive care, and the connection between oral health and systemic health.

After that, I pursued my Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine in New York. Studying at Columbia was both challenging and rewarding – it pushed me academically and clinically, while also exposing me to diverse patient populations and advanced approaches to dental care.

Throughout this journey, there were certainly challenges – adapting to a new country, navigating rigorous educational pathways, and balancing personal and professional growth. But each experience helped shape who I am today as a dentist and as a person.

Today, I’m proud to combine my international background, public health perspective, and advanced clinical training to provide compassionate, patient-centered dental care. My goal has always been to make patients feel comfortable, informed, and confident in their treatment while continuously growing as a clinician through ongoing education and professional involvement.

Looking back, I’m grateful for every step of the journey, and I believe it reflects the value of hard work, perseverance, and staying committed to lifelong learning.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it definitely was not a completely smooth road – but I believe the challenges were an important part of the journey and helped shape me both professionally and personally.

One of the biggest transitions was moving from India to the United States and adapting to a completely new educational system, culture, and environment. Dentistry is highly competitive in the U.S., especially for internationally trained dentists, so the process required a tremendous amount of dedication, persistence, and hard work.

There were academic challenges as well. Pursuing both a Master of Public Health and later a DDS degree at Columbia University meant managing rigorous coursework, clinical training, and long hours while continuously striving to perform at a high level. At the same time, being away from family and building a new life in a different country came with its own emotional and personal challenges.

Another important lesson was learning to adapt and grow through uncertainty. Whether it was preparing for licensing exams, applying to advanced programs, or balancing financial and professional responsibilities, there were many moments that required patience and resilience.

But looking back, those struggles taught me discipline, humility, and perseverance. They also gave me a deeper appreciation for the opportunities I’ve had and strengthened my commitment to helping patients from all backgrounds feel understood and cared for. I think those experiences ultimately made me a more compassionate healthcare provider and a stronger person overall.
