Hidden Gems: Meet Carla (Micole) Campbell of Children’s Social Expo LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carla (Micole) Campbell.

Hi Carla (Micole), thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I began logging paperwork for MHMRA for children with mental health in 1991. When I started working at The Bridge a domestic violence shelter in 1999 I was able to learn a lot but also saw a lot that was scary happening to children and their mothers. I grew up without my father and it weighed heavy on me. I began to struggle in school with my behaviors. I would write poetry to help me cope with my own personal trauma and I realized that helping those families helped me somehow. I then went to Houston Area Women’s Center and again worked with families creating safety plans for them to be able to escape their homes if they decided to return from their abusers. This program taught me a lot about domestic violence and how it affects children in the home. I enrolled in school at Prairie View and my major was education but had a death in my family and came back home and swore never to leave again. I changed my major to Human Services and Consumer Sciences with an emphasis on Child and Family Development. By this time I had lost 11 babies and was tired but I loved the work I was doing. Once I graduated in 2007 we became pregnant again and had no luck and then 2008 God blessed us with Sariah. I was still at HAWC and then I collapsed on the job. I was rushed to the hospital and they couldn’t find anything wrong. I decided to go to a neurologist and after an MRI was told I have severe brain damage. I was broken my baby that I had prayed for would not have a mother that would be here to raise her. I was sick all the time and was placed on a lot of medication. I was in a fog every day and couldn’t remember anything. Sariah was not getting the best of me anymore if any of me at all. I was immediately placed on 18 medications. I stayed home and went back to school and got my special education and generalist certifications to teach. I kept pushing and went to The Mission of Yahweh again working with families and was able to create and get licensed child care for the children on property. I enjoyed my time there because I learned so much. While here I was able to get my director license and learn how to work with donors and find donations for non profit. I was able to create a space where the families and staff all spent time and did trips with their children. After going back to school and getting my teacher certifications in special education and generalist I went on an interview the same week they removed my tube due to my pregnancy. I was moving slow and the principal was amazed that I did not cancel the interview and hired me on the spot. I was able to teach in a behavior unit for 3 years and loved it but administration was a lot for me and I didn’t want anyone to know my brain was broke. I continued to deal with everything and then God told me to open a child development center for children that are diagnosed as neurodivergent, emotional disturbances and other health impairments. You see I had been in training this entire time and had no idea. I had been on their side of people not understanding them. I knew that me repeating myself was due to the complexities and the growth of their brains and I knew how it felt to be misunderstood. So for 4 years I have been working hard to provide a safe and nurturing space where they can be comfortable to express themselves and learn how to self regulate. Everything I encountered from the age of 14 till now was God’s preparation for me to work with these babies. I opened my home daycare and now am looking to open a building to help more families. We focus on social emotional learning and keep documentation through edeca which is shared with parents, we monitor strengths and weakness in academics which is monitored through CLI-engage and share during conference with parents. We also learn who Jesus is daily and share verses with parents. As a certified educator in Special Education and Generalist I create a learning plan with families using this data to create insight into the whole child. I love what I do and enjoy seeing children happy just being themselves. Children’s Social Expo LLC creates a creative approach to early childhood educaton. We have partnered with Center of Excellence, PreK Partnership, Texas Education Freedom, and Collaborative for Children to create Kindergarten readiness.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Life presents each of us with a unique set of challenges. For me, the journey has been shaped by a combination of health struggles, family dynamics, and the environment in which I was raised. Living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), growing up without a father, navigating a complicated relationship with my mother, and facing the realities of life in the hood have all contributed to my story. This paper reflects on these obstacles, the lessons I’ve learned, and how I’ve found strength in adversity.
Living with Multiple Sclerosis
Being diagnosed with MS was a turning point in my life. The initial symptoms—fatigue, numbness, and difficulty with coordination—were alarming and confusing. As I came to terms with my diagnosis, I realized that MS would impact not just my physical health but also my mental well-being. Every day, I faced uncertainty about my body and my future. The flare-ups were unpredictable, sometimes robbing me of my independence. There were days when even walking felt like climbing a mountain.
Adjusting to MS meant learning to listen to my body, seeking out medical support, and educating myself about the disease. I had to accept help, something that was never easy for me. Despite these challenges, MS taught me patience and resilience. I discovered that my limits do not define me; rather, my determination to push past them shapes who I am. MS is the blessing that slowed me down enough to focus on Yhwh and grow closer to him.
Growing Up Without a Father
The absence of a father figure in my life left a void that was difficult to articulate. I often wondered why my father wasn’t there, and how my life might have been different if he had been present. Without his guidance and support, I had to navigate milestones on my own. I missed out on daddy-daughter dances and a sense of protection that many of my peers took for granted.
This challenge forced me to mature quickly and become independent. I found role models in a teacher, grandmother, and aunt, piecing together the advice and encouragement I needed. Over time, I learned to accept my father’s absence, using it as motivation to become the kind of person I wished he could have been for me.
Navigating a Relationship with my Mother
My relationship with my mother was complicated from the start. Her personality meant that our home was often filled with tension; conversations revolved around her needs and feelings, leaving little room for my own. I felt invisible, struggling to assert my individuality and have my emotions acknowledged.
Overcoming this dynamic was one of my toughest battles. I had to develop strong boundaries and learn to advocate for myself. Therapy and self-reflection helped me understand the roots of her behavior and the impact it had on my development. I realized that, while I could not change her, I could change how I responded—choosing self-compassion and forgiveness over resentment.
Growing Up in the Hood
The neighborhood I grew up in was marked by poverty, crime, and limited opportunities. Violence and instability were everyday realities. I witnessed friends and neighbors struggle to break free from a cycle of hardship. Resources were scarce, and dreams often felt out of reach.
Sunny side instilled in me a sense of community and resourcefulness. I learned the value of loyalty and friendship. Navigating these streets taught me to be vigilant and adaptable, skills that have served me well throughout my life. The challenges of my environment motivated me to strive for something better, knowing that my circumstances did not have to define my future.
Lessons Learned and Moving Forward
Each obstacle I’ve faced has shaped my character in profound ways. MS taught me perseverance and the importance of self-care. Growing up without a father made me independent and resourceful. My relationship with my mother pushed me to seek self-awareness and emotional maturity. Life in the hood showed me the power of community and resilience.
Though the road has been difficult, I am proud of the person I’ve become. My journey is a testament to the strength found in adversity. Moving forward, I am committed to sharing my story, supporting others who face similar challenges, and continuing to grow, no matter what life brings.
Conclusion
Reflecting on my life’s obstacles has helped me find meaning in the pain and hope in the struggle. While my journey has been far from easy, each challenge has become a stepping stone toward personal growth. I am more than my circumstances—I am a survivor, a fighter, and a believer in the possibility of a brighter future.
