Hidden Gems: Meet Carol Davis of BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carol Davis.

Carol Davis

Hi Carol, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
A Native Texas, I was born and reared on a Warda farm and ranch owned by my family since 1875. Warda is one of the State’s many German-American communities, and I spoke only German before starting school in a one-room parochial school, Holy Cross Lutheran. After graduation from LaGrange High School, I moved to Houston to attend six months of business college before taking a position as a stenographer with the FBI in Washington, D.C.

After two years in Washington, D.C. I transferred to the Houston FBI Office. While working there days, I attended fours years of night school at McMahon College of Court Reporting, while holding down an evening job as a Spacette (usher) at the Houston Astrodome.

In 1971 I earned my Court Reporter certification from the Supreme Court of the State of Texas and worked briefly for a small court reporting firm before founding Carol Davis Reporting, Records & Video, Inc. Today the firm is headquartered in Houston, Texas.

After the City Lights faded and yearning for a more peaceful environment and wanting to get back to nature, in 1993 I found my ideal spot in Cat Spring, Texas, while still commuting to Houston for my court reporting business. Since there were several houses on the property, and having this peaceful, relaxing space, I wanted to share it with others who need some rest and relaxation in the countryside. I founded BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch. Now catering to the city folks who want to relax in nature and offering activities such as horseback riding, Exotic Animal Safari, archery, tomahawk/knife/star throw, trapshooting, fishing, massages and a variety of packages such as Lone Star Stargazing Package, Uncork Adventure (horseback/wine tasting), Horseback/picnic Package, Blissful Romance Package, Ride Off into Sunset Package, Texas Dude Ranch Adventure Package.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would say fairly smooth. Growing at a slower pace from the beginning I believe helped to smooth it out. Technology has certainly helped with the day to day operations. Some struggles would include finding the right personnel for this kind of business.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch?
I “sell” peace and quiet and relaxation in the countryside! I specialize in top-notch hospitality, going the extra mile for guests, making sure they are comfortable and having a memorable time. What might set me apart from other bed and breakfasts is that because I have the space, I can offer the activities, etc., that I have listed previously. I would like readers to know that here is a place, very close to Houston, where you can come for a day, a week, or even longer and experience some digital detox, participate in activities that might be new to the guest, celebrate milestones, anniversaries, birthdays. Have a romantic evening or weekend, or bring your family for family fun.

What’s next?
To keep on offering what is already in place and adding a few more small cabins in the future. Always looking for more ways to offer more adventures for my guests. A BB Gun range for young and young at heart is in the works, almost done!
