As a young African American woman, I saw firsthand how skincare often overlooked our community, with harmful myths like “African Americans don’t need sunscreen.” These misconceptions have caused real damage, but I’m here to set the record straight.
At The Facialholic Bar, we’re rewriting the narrative on skincare. Our mission is to educate and empower by highlighting that melanated skin needs sunscreen just as much as any other. We offer a vibrant and welcoming space for everyone—whether you’re battling hyperpigmentation, premature aging, cystic acne, or sun damage.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey has definitely been challenging. Starting this business came with numerous obstacles that tested my resolve and adaptability. Securing funding was one of the major hurdles. Initial investments were tighter than anticipated, and managing cash flow effectively was a constant challenge. I had to be inventive with budgeting and find creative ways to stretch every dollar.
Marketing has been my toughest battle. In the skincare industry, staying tech-savvy and keeping up with social media trends is no easy task. It’s been a steep learning curve, but I’m slowly mastering it. Competing in the beauty industry is always intense, and differentiating our services has required significant effort and strategic adjustments.
Being an entrepreneur at 26 has also meant making substantial personal sacrifices. The long hours and high stress have taken a toll on my work-life balance, making it a continuous struggle to juggle personal life with the demands of a startup.
Despite these challenges, overcoming them has been incredibly rewarding. Each struggle has taught me valuable lessons and contributed to the growth and resilience of the business. As my mom always says, “Carrington, when you’re starting a business, there will be growing pains, and this too shall pass.” So, I’m growing alongside my business, day by day.

In addition to our advanced facials, we are excited to soon offer a range of services including health and wellness shots, Botox and fillers, microneedling, and body contouring. My specialization includes treating pigmentation issues, performing lymphatic facial massages, and addressing acne with remarkable efficacy.

Transitioning from working with franchise companies to establishing myself as a solo esthetician has been a significant achievement. I encourage readers to view skincare as a long-term commitment. What are your plans for the future?
Currently, I am in the process of securing a medical director, which will allow us to expand our services to target the deeper layers of the skin beyond the epidermis. In Texas, a medical director is essential for offering advanced treatments like microneedling and health and wellness shots. Achieving this milestone is incredibly exciting and a testament to the dedication and hard work invested in making these enhancements a reality.
