Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Nicklas.
Hi Christina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For over 20 years, I’ve had a passion for handmade bath and body products and the creative side of this industry. It’s something that has always interested me personally, and over the years it became something our entire family connected over. My parents, my sister’s family, and our family all genuinely love the world of handmade, simple ingredient bath, body, and home products and the experience that comes with them.
Once our kids were older and starting their own lives after college, we reached a season where our family was ready to build something together. We had always talked about starting a business as a family, and opening a storefront finally felt like the right opportunity and timing for all of us.
What started as a small family business quickly became something much more meaningful to us. We fell in love with the community aspect of it, getting to know customers personally, creating products people truly enjoyed bringing into their homes, and building a space that felt welcoming, creative, and personal.
As we grew, we realized we wanted the business to reflect our family more fully and align with the standards, creativity, and values that were important to us. That transition eventually led to Magnolia Ritual, our independent Texas apothecary focused on small-batch bath, body, and home fragrance products, along with thoughtfully curated goods from other local makers and small businesses.
We’re still very much a hands-on family business, and I think that’s what makes it special to us. Everything we do is rooted in creating a warm, honest experience for our customers while staying true to the kind of products and environment we would want for our own families and homes.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I don’t think any small business journey is ever completely smooth, and ours definitely has had its share of challenges. Building a family business comes with a lot of moving parts because you are balancing relationships, finances, creativity, operations, and growth all at the same time. You care deeply about it because it’s personal.
One of the biggest learning curves was simply stepping into an entirely new world as business owners. Loving handmade products and actually running a retail business day-to-day are two very different things. There’s so much behind the scenes that people never see, inventory, staffing, systems, regulations, product development, marketing, and learning how to adapt quickly when things don’t go as planned.
We also opened and grew during a time when retail and consumer habits were changing rapidly, so learning how to evolve while still staying true to who we are was important to us. Over time, we realized we wanted more creative freedom and the ability to shape the business in a way that fully reflected our family, our standards, and the experience we wanted to create for customers. That transition took a lot of work, patience, and faith in ourselves.
At the same time, some of the struggles have actually become the most rewarding parts of the journey. Working closely with family teaches you a lot about communication, trust, and resilience. There have definitely been stressful seasons, but there’s also something really special about building something together that reflects all of us in different ways.
I think the biggest thing we’ve learned is to stay flexible, keep listening, and continue growing. We are always learning, refining, and trying to do things better, and honestly, that mindset has probably helped us more than anything else.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Magnolia Ritual is a family-run Texas apothecary centered around small-batch bath, body, and home fragrance products, along with curated goods from local makers and small businesses we genuinely love supporting. We offer everything from handcrafted soaps, bath products, candles, laundry care, and home fragrance to DIY experiences, custom scenting, workshops, and community events.
What makes us a little different is that we’ve intentionally tried to create more than just a retail store. We wanted the space to feel warm, creative, approachable, and community-centered. Customers can come in to shop, but they can also pour candles, create custom fragrance blends, make bath products, attend workshops, or just slow down and enjoy the experience. We love creating an environment that feels interactive and personal instead of overly polished or intimidating.
We also care deeply about transparency and being thoughtful about the products we create. We tend to lean toward simple, effective ingredients and products that people can realistically use and enjoy in everyday life. We’re constantly refining, learning, and evolving as we grow, and we try to stay very intentional about what we bring into the shop and put our name on.
I think what we’re most proud of brand-wise is that Magnolia Ritual genuinely reflects our family and our community. It doesn’t feel manufactured to us. The shop has grown into a space where creativity, connection, and small business support all come together naturally. Some of our favorite moments honestly have nothing to do with sales, they’re the workshops, the conversations with customers, watching families come in together, collaborating with local makers, or seeing people turn our products and experiences into part of their routines and traditions.
We want readers to know that at the heart of it, we’re still a small family business that truly values people and community. We’re incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received and excited to continue growing into something that feels authentic, elevated, and rooted in who we are.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think people are becoming much more intentional about what they bring into their homes and use on their bodies, and I only see that continuing over the next 5–10 years. Customers are asking more questions, reading labels more carefully, paying attention to ingredients, and looking for products and businesses that feel more transparent and authentic.
At the same time, I think there’s also a growing desire for experiences and connection, not just products. People still enjoy convenience, but they also want places that feel personal and memorable. That’s part of why interactive retail, DIY experiences, workshops, custom scenting, and community-focused spaces have become so important. Customers want to feel connected to what they’re buying and to the people behind it.
I also think we’ll continue seeing a shift back toward smaller, more intentional businesses and locally made products. There’s a growing appreciation for craftsmanship, quality, and businesses that have an actual story and real people behind them. Consumers are becoming more aware of mass production and are looking for brands they feel they can trust.
From a product standpoint, I think the industry will continue moving toward simpler formulations, multifunctional products, refillable options, and more thoughtful packaging. Sustainability and transparency are becoming expectations rather than bonus features.
At the same time, I think customers are getting smarter about marketing. People can tell when something feels overly manufactured or trend-driven, so brands that stay genuine and consistent will stand out more over time.
For us personally at Magnolia Ritual, we hope to continue growing in a way that keeps that balance, creating elevated products and experiences while still feeling approachable, community-centered, and genuinely personal.
