Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney San Miguel.
Hi Courtney, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a senior in high school, praying and discerning for my future, I believed I had the talents and skills (that desperately needed sharpening) to seek counseling as a career. Throughout college, the more I learned about psychology, the more I loved it! Upon graduation with my Master’s degree, I began having babies. This significantly slowed my progress in completing my associate hours… for all the right reasons! I prayed about how I could complete them, and we received an invitation to move to Seattle to help the Christian community there. As the doors began opening for a cross-nation move, it was revealed that I would have an additional 6 years to complete the associate hours! This was the final affirmation to go. We moved to Seattle one month before a very large church closed down. The city was full of hurting and confused Christians who needed counseling and the churches were packed to the brim with pain too overwhelming for the pastors to be able to minister to it all. I jumped right in and began serving the community for over 10 years! During that decade I partnered with the North American Mission Board and the Puget Sound Baptist Association to serve churches and church planters across the Pacific Northwest. I taught at conferences and workshops, and helped with the emotional and spiritual health of Ministers across the region. Eventually my husband’s job brought us back to Texas, to Houston, where I have moved my practice to assist those who are needing Christian counseling and continuing to serve churches through para-church organizations in the area. In 2025, I taught a breakout session at the Houston Church Planting Network’s Annual Plant Houston Conference. Most recently, I assisted the Texas Baptists with their Church Starting program. In 2026, I plan to be more involved with the Union Baptist Association’s efforts toward women in ministry.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I truly believe that no road is ever completely smooth. We would not grow if that were the case! Thankfully, my path has been littered with growth opportunities! Most recently, I have been navigating the challenge moving my practice across the US! In many ways, this move has resembled starting again with networking, marketing, and building trust in the community. Thankfully, my experience in the PNW has connected me to some amazing people doing incredible things here in Houston! My business expansion also means that I have almost immediate availability for those seeking counseling care! As of right now, I don’t have any waiting lists!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Water’s Edge Christian Counseling?
Water’s Edge celebrated 10 years of serving the Lord and the community in August! I specialize in anxiety, depression, spiritual issues, and Church issues, specifically leadership health. I recently became a Certified Adult ADHD provider. I offer an integrated approach of Licensed psychological care combined with Biblical counseling practices. I am a partnered provider among many Christian organizations, including the North American Mission Board, Send Network, the Texas Baptists, the Union Baptist Association, and the Houston Church Planting Network. I am available for Conferences, Retreats, Breakout Sessions, Workshops, and of course, Counseling Sessions.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
This is not your average career choice. Holding space for people who are hurting can be heavy at times. Figure out what feeds your soul and prioritize that practice routinely as soon as you start! Don’t wait until you are experiencing care-giver fatigue or burnout. There is nothing like seeing a client through their entire counseling process to completion and seeing a life radically changed! We get a front row seat to some of the most beautiful work in the world! It is totally worth it!
