Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia Martinez.
Hi Cynthia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My fitness journey started about nine years ago. I realized I was making poor health choices and desired to live a healthier lifestyle. I decided to change and make a difference. I found a Groupon deal for a boot camp class and decided to give it a shot – what could go wrong? It wasn’t easy, but after years of hard work, I lost nearly 35 pounds. After a few years, I had made fitness a lifestyle for myself.
When the chance to teach classes at a studio arose, I knew I wanted to take advantage of it, but I was still quite nervous and didn’t know where to begin. I was so used to being the trainee, not the trainer. I finally got the courage to do it and went for it. Little did I know back then, this would be something I wanted to do forever. For over a year, I taught HIIT exercises at a local studio. The pandemic impacted my ability to keep teaching in person that I had no choice but to take a break.
Knowing in my heart that I wanted to establish my own brand/business, I decided now was the time to get started. I realized I wanted to leave the same positive impression on others that others had left on me, just in my own unique way. I’m now a certified personal trainer with over three years of experience.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a business during a pandemic was very challenging. When Covid-19 happened, it restricted the resources I had. Learning how to motivate clients through virtual means was not an easy task. I had a handful of regular clients, but I had difficulty growing and reaching new clients. At the time, I converted my garage into a training studio. I held some group fitness classes but mainly offered virtual classes. Although I had previously taught classes, I was pretty shy and worried about approaching people independently. Of course, I had thoughts, just like any other individual. I used to fear if anyone would take my brand seriously.
My good trainer friend informed me that he would be relocating to Houston for a bit. Together, we taught classes in person and online. It helped me get my name out there because it required me to get out of my shell and venture beyond my comfort zone. I owe him a big thanks. He provided me with the push I needed to gain the confidence I needed.
Another challenge I faced was that I wanted more out of my business. After all, we always desire more, right? I began to feel like I was stuck and was unsure of what my next move should be. I knew I wasn’t financially ready to open my studio because my small business was still emerging. I almost felt like giving up and prayed to God for guidance.
Soon after, I ran into a local and well-known trainer who presented an opportunity I couldn’t pass up on- my own space in her studio. It was tough to run my small business without prior knowledge of how businesses work. However, I’ve discovered that taking risks and networking with people have helped me overcome the adversities I’ve experienced. I recently quit my corporate job, and I’m now focusing on building my business full time. It was scary taking the risk, but it was the best thing I ever did.
We’ve been impressed with CynFit Integral Fitness, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I offer group training classes at StephFitness Studio in Houston, TX. The classes are structured using a challenge system. They are held Monday through Thursday, lasting four weeks. There are 16 classes total, each lasting one hour. Dumbbells, resistance bands, and body weight are incorporated in various high-intensity and strength-training sessions.
Clients can earn money as a reward for completing the challenge, which we believe will motivate you even more. The winners are chosen by the changes in their overall body composition. I take pride in hearing my students express how well they feel emotionally and physically in my class. The joy of helping others in building confidence is indescribable. I genuinely love what I do!
I also started a meal prep business during the last two years. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all available. It’s been a huge benefit and has introduced me to many amazing individuals. However, for the upcoming year of 2022, I had to make a major decision to reduce my meal preparations. I want to provide my customers with the best service possible when representing my brand. I only need to restructure and hire a new team to assist me.
I’m just one person juggling too many tasks, so I appreciate my clients’ patience. I’ve also recommended them to other local food preparation businesses in their area to keep them on track. Thanks to my meal prep services, over 100 meals were donated to the homeless. Giving back to the community has always been a personal goal, and I will continue to do so when I can.
I’m always striving for new techniques to be creative or to brainstorm new ideas. So one day, it suddenly clicked: PROTEIN DONUTS! Who doesn’t like donuts, and what better way to eat one than in a healthier way? They were a big hit after I incorporated them into my brand. When I started working in small business markets, the donuts sold out! I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. People I didn’t even know discovered me on Instagram and went to the markets to buy donuts. “Are you the donut girl?” I’m frequently asked.
As I previously stated, I am constantly working to improve my brand. I created customized clothing items such as shirts and hoodies. It’s very exciting to hear or see my brand all around town, and I can’t wait to come out with more. I will also be having CynFit workout equipment for the upcoming year, so stay tuned!
My goal is to open my studio in 2022. I want to combine all of my company’s services into one place—a peaceful place for everyone who needs to decompress. A gym that sells ready-to-eat meals as you leave. After your workout, there will also be a place to eat at the gym. Or even enjoy a nice protein donut! I’ve got a lot of plans and ideas in the works, and I’m looking forward to putting them into action.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Never giving up has been the most important lesson I’ve learned. Don’t compare your journey to others’ because we all go at different speeds and are on different paths. Patience is key. There were many times when I just wanted to find a studio space and start working. To tell you the truth, I’m glad I waited. Throughout this experience, I’ve learned a lot about what I would and would not do as a business owner. I’m still learning, and I’m sure I’ll face some difficulties as I go, but I’m prepared to put in the hard work to accomplish them.
In my opinion, supporting one another is so important, regardless of whether or not you work in the same field.
Don’t look at it as a competition; There’s room for everyone to grow. We are often our harshest critics, but we must learn to appreciate our accomplishments. Focusing on the positive instead of the negative will go a long way! Also, remember that rest is not a reward; it should always be given. Don’t overwork yourself, and take as many breaks as you need. We’re only human, and we’re doing our best.
