Today we’d like to introduce you to Danay Jones.
Hi Danay, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I decided to get serious about my sobriety after battling addiction for over a decade. The pandemic gave me time to address my mental health and substance abuse issues. On April 10, 2020, a new life filled with gratitude began when I decided to get sober. I realized the fun things in my life didn’t have to end because alcohol was no longer in the picture. I went back to school and became a licensed chemical dependency counselor. Then, in 2022, I created Sober Girls Houston, a support group for women who want to enjoy activities without it being alcohol-centered. A safe space to have fun, share their experiences and uplift each other.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Though my long journey in recovery was plagued with excessive drinking and shame of my mental health issues. I started therapy and invested in real self-discovery; Even with my struggles, I always found my stability, thanks to the support of friends, family, and my sober circle.
As you know, we’re big fans of Sober Girls Houston. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a support group for women choosing to abstain from alcohol and or are in recovery. We host a range of dry events from museum exhibits, sober brunches, mock-tail pop ups, yoga, and more. We offer online and in-person events, host live speaking events on a range of sobriety topics. Inclusion of sober patrons with NA and spiritless beverages at bars and restaurants is the only viable option if we want to see real change and acceptance in social settings. Sober is never boring when you’re with us. Alcohol doesn’t start the party; we do!
Sober Girl events have something for everyone. In the past, we’ve enjoyed Burlesque dance performances by some of the most beautiful local and international burlesque superstars at Avant Gardens. We’ve hosted a Vinyl brunch at 93Til with a curated playlist published on the menu, culled from the lounge’s collection of more than 500 records of mostly hip hop, funk, and jazz. We enjoyed dinners and mocktails, followed by dancing at Idle Hands to House, Afro Caribbean, and Reggaetón. We’re currently working on Sober Cinco which will be a Cinco De Mayo event for anyone who’d prefer a non-alcoholic or low spirit experience with food and local artisans. Stay tuned for more details!
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
My motivation to end my addiction and change my life is my mother Debra, who’s been sober from alcohol for over 20 years. Her journey wasn’t easy, but her continued sobriety helped her accomplish admirable goals. She’s an activist who has led grassroot organizations and in 2012, introduced President Obama at Minute Maid Park. She found a new purpose in life through sobriety, reconnected with family, spirituality, and the welfare of the community.
