Today we’d like to introduce you to Delma Gomes.
Delma, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I remember starting baking at the age of 12. I baked for family, friends and nothing more than usual. I started baking because my mom taught me some and from that moment on, I started to love everything about baking. I remember at the age of 13/14, asking my dad to buy me a recipe book ( which he did ). And I dived in and tried as many recipes, cakes that I could. I also had as an inspiration, a tv show presenter ( Ana Maria Braga from Brazil ). I would write down all the recipes from her tv show and tried to recreate them. As time went by, I stayed away from baking regularly, to going years without baking. Deep down, I always had the yearning to bake, but it never occurred to me, making it a means of life or more than just a hobby. When the pandemic started, I wanted to keep myself busy … and that’s when I decided to make some homemade ice creams and eventually ( less than a year ), I dive into the adventure to start making professional cakes and other goodies. Still learning, but I’m proud of where I am … almost a year later.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. Starting a business during the pandemia, was a whole leap of faith, to be honest. Plus being a self-taught baker, added to more stress, sleepless nights and sometimes disappointments. I remember sometimes, not having enough money to buy a mixer, for example … so I had to postpone a lot of things because I couldn’t afford a good planetarium mixer. I later got .. but it was a second .. she is still working just fine.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Sweeter Than Sweetzz?
I am a self taught baker, and still learning some new tricks. I am glad that my sweets brighten some people’s days/life. Most people know me for my famous boxed chocolate cakes, my pilinhas (donuts sticks), and many other things that are the usual sells. I believe that my customer service and the deliciousness of my cakes set me apart from others.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Just do it. It always seems impossible until it’s done. Keep focused and don’t let the downtime, make you want to give up. Sometimes, good things take time. Your time to shine will come, and you will get all that you ever wanted. One word of advice, get to know more about budgeting and pricing. I felt that I priced myself down because I was new ( still am )… learn to be the best you can be at your business and don’t ever price yourself down.
