Hi Dr. Etai, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Even as a child, I always had a love for science and the way living things function. I also enjoyed interacting with people, hearing their stories, and asking questions. After college, pursuing medicine was a natural course to fulfill these passions. Otolaryngology & Head and Neck Surgery was a balanced field incorporating surgery with medicine. The intricacies of the head and neck anatomy and the creativity involved with facial plastic surgery allured me and led to my decision to pursue fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Starting my own practice in 2010 was definitely a big decision that carried much apprehension, but, I kept telling myself that I was well trained, had good surgical skills, and was a good communicator. These qualities allowed me to achieve the successful practice I have today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting your own practice is just like starting a small business. I hustled a lot in the first couple of years going to other physicians’ offices and trying to get referrals. Some were open to this and helpful but many were not. It did not deter me and I started doing a lot of reconstructive surgery on the face and neck after skin cancer removal and slowly began building my cosmetic practice. Now the majority of my referrals do not come from other physicians but from patients whose trust and confidence I have gained throughout the years allowing me to have a flourishing cosmetic practice.
