Hidden Gems: Meet Dr. Ezinne Ozurumba of Havilah Health

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Ezinne Ozurumba.

Hi Dr. Ozurumba, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I migrated to the US in 2006 from Nigeria with my family. I had just finished High School and was looking forward to continuing my education in college. I had so trouble finding what I wanted to major in, all I knew was that I wanted to serve my fellow man/woman. I changed my mind so many things but Pharmacy was always the constant. God being on my side, I was able to start school. It was very challenging, my limits were pushed but I was able to discover what I could accomplish.

After school, I obtained a Doctor in Pharmacy degree. I was helping people in Pharmacy every day. My empathy was also growing. I saw people come in and out to pick up their prescriptions and hoping that this will solve all their problems, I educated my patients on how to use their medication safely and their disease conditions.

I also noticed something. Most people were not getting better. More and more medications were added to what they had to take. Some for the same disease, some for the side effects that they had from the previous medication. Some people would even ask if there was another alternative. Then, I had no idea of another way because we were taught this is the only way. I encouraged them to take their medications as instructed and things would work out.

Underneath, my heart was searching for answers. One day I gave across a different approach to health called Functional Medicine. The more I studied, the more it made sense. This was the answer I have been searching for. It took me back to my Home country, this was how my family lived, using food as medicine. I practiced this at a young age, I didn’t know it was called Functional Medicine here. With my knowledge I was able to turn my health story around and that of my family. Today, I am helping as many people that will raise their hand for help. The truth is that you cannot force help on people.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has been far from a smooth road.

But what is life without the turns and bends. We are not perfect people, we make mistakes and I am not exempt.

I struggle to continue to love people because I have had my share of encounters with very bitter people who only want to transfer their bitterness to everyone around them.

I suffered numerous betrayals from “friends.” I survived a divorce. Out of the bitter experience beautiful twins were given to me.

I am constantly finding balance to staying a present mom, employee and business owner.

Through it all and with God on my side, I have overcome and will continue to till Jesus tarry.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Havilah Health?

What were you like growing up?
I enjoyed my childhood. I played a lot. Growing up with 3 brothers and lots of male cousins, I had to keep up and will not be bullied. I fought them almost all the time. I played so hard that my mom was concerned that I would injure myself, lol.

Maybe because I was surrounded by boys, I felt more masculine. Now as a woman, I am learning every day to be in touch with my feminine side.

I would never give up. When I was told something was impossible, I just have to make sure I proved them wrong.

As a child, I was interested in a wide variety of things, especially what I wanted to be when I grew up. I went from doctor, inspector, police officer, investigator, lawyer, pharmacist, dentist then back to pharmacist. All those other fields still interest me now. I love learning new information.
