Hidden Gems: Meet Dr. Thessalynn Carrigan of Carrigan Real Estate Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Thessalynn Carrigan.

Hi Dr. Carrigan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am originally from Omaha, Nebraska. I have lived in Houston, Texas for 21 years, and it has been the best decision of my life to move here. I come from a family of 11. I always knew I was destined for something great but I did not ever think I would of blossomed into a serial entrepreneur in Houston. Growing up in Omaha and then moving to a big city like Houston all by myself was very intimidating but I decided that I wanted more for my life.

I originally started out working as a Math specialist in Omaha, Nebraska. After moving to Houston, I began working with HISD as 2nd-grade teacher and was promoted to an instructional coordinator. A few years into working with the school district, I then transitioned into the collegiate arena and begin my career at Texas Southern University. During that time, I started my tax service, Tax Max Tax Service. I opened two locations. Fast-forward 10 years, I then transitioned to Lone Star College, where I still currently teach mathematics while still managing my tax service. In 2019, I decided that I wanted to do Real Estate also and I obtained my license. I only worked part-time in real estate since I was still working my job as a professor. Then the pandemic hit, which allowed me more time to focus on Real Estate. I was able to work remotely at my job and spent my remaining hours creating Carrigan Real Estate Group. I was able to combine both my passions in Math and Real Estate at the same time. In 2020, I started a Lash and Beauty Vending Business called ICY Lash. In 2021, I was able to secure a spot in the local mall. In that same year, I also started my Turo rentals. In 2022, I decided to open kiosks for ShoeMGK, I currently own three locations and plan to expand more. In the near future, I plan to open two more businesses and eventually obtain my broker license.

I am currently married to Raymond Carrigan and I have a beautiful daughter, Brooklyn Carrigan. I also have four outstanding bonus children. Raymond Jr, Lauren, Bailey, and Connor Carrigan.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of my most challenging obstacles I faced in my career was at the University. I was definitely a great educator, cared for my adult students tremendously, and was well-versed in the technological area within mathematics, but I had some envious coworkers who tried to sabotage my work ethic/character at work. One person, in particular, befriended me but behind the scenes was trying to get me fired. It was definitely a lesson learned that not all people have your best interest at heart. That obstacle started a fire within me to become the entrepreneur that I am.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
